      Router still dropping the line

After aprox 14 months, my Sky Netgear DG834GT router is STILL dropping the line at inconveniant times.
It's something I've got used to, but can anyone offer a solution please?

When I had the service first off, I complained to Tier 1 and they eventully got Tier 3 to ring me, several times.
On each occasion we went through all the nausea of checking my computer, changing this, changing that, downloading the other, etc, etc, etc. Nothing changed! I was still stuck with a dicky connection, but in the end I got fed up with Tier 3 messing up my computer's settings, so I just let it ride.

As I say, 14 months down the line, the router still drops the line when it wants to, usually at an inconveniant time. I've tried using the Mosseywell Bounce Sky toy, version 9 of which never completes the connection, and if I use version 8 I get constant nag screens demanding I switch to version 9! I used to be able to alter the noise ratio using either Sky Netgear DG834GT utility version 0.4 or Sky Netgear DG834GT utility version 0.4 , but both of those have stopped working.

OK, for a fiver a month Sky B/B is cheap for the Mid service. This usually downloads at between 350 and 600 kbs depending on which site I'm using, though it sometimes drops tp below 50 kbs. Until I cut the power to the router and then wait 5 minutes for it to re-connect!

So, is there a solution, apart from moving to a differnt ISP? At least you can understand the Sky helpers, and they don't talk like flower-pot men as the poor BT B/band users helpline do!

A tip to help out with the Sky secure e-mail nonsensense. Run a program called Postcast Server (which is free after registering) and then you get to change your SMTP settings so all outbound e-mail goes through the Postcast server.

Re: Router still dropping the line

have you done the tests from the "test" socket ?

post your stats and we may see if a problem stands out

(full detailed stats would be better, have a search for "mels notes" )

Yes, did all that. Disconnected the bell wire thingy. Then had to call BT in to sort out the wiring at a cost of 900 !

I dont' have a program to post the stats.

This is due to the router firmware being upgraded. You can use Mel'sNotes as suggested above or install JamesCustomFirmware which allows all sorts of cool tweaks and also survives a reboot.

Re: Router still dropping the line

Nothing very obvious, but that's not surprising after only 2 mins. You really need to run for several hours to get a true picture.

Re: Router still dropping the line

It might be a bit of a bind but all I can suggest is that you take your stats every 30 mins or so and copy them to a folder on you desktop.

just to rule any internal problems, could you do a set of stats from the test socket ?
