Can't connect wirelessly to Sky router.

      Hi,

My friend has just signed up with Sky B/B & received a Netgear DG934G router. This connected to the B/band straight away & was configured via ethernet cable.

The problem is that neither his laptop (Toshiba Sat pro A100) or his ipod will connect wirelessly., they both see the connection but will not connect even after trying various settings (different security, ssid, channels etc).

After hours on the phone to Sky support he got his user name/pass so he could use his Belkin F5D7630 router but...... while both the laptop & ipod connect wirelessly, the Belkin does not "see" the adsl line therefore no internet connection.

Is there any way round this to get either router working properly? Or is there a way to use the Belkin as the wireless connection & link through ethernet cable to the Netgear?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

      Thanks in advance.

did you try using the official sky router and then disabling wireless encryption? if it works then, you are inputting the wpa key wrong.

Re: Can't connect wirelessly to Sky router.

You won't get any support from Sky on your own router and whoever gave out a user name and password could well get into a lot of trouble. Best thing to do is get the sky router back on, go onto ethernet, browse to 192.168.0.1, turn off encryption and see if you can connect to the router wirelessly. If you can then put WPA on, check you have the SSID and key correctly written down. Initiate the wireless connection to the router, when asked enter the WPA key all in caps, no numbers (if default key in use) and see what happens.
If the Ipod (I take it you mean ITouch or IPhone) and laptop see the SSID then its an encryption issue or incorrect key more often than not. Depending on software version the ITouch/ Phone may need to be on WEP to connect anyway but it should work on WPA as long as you make sure you are entering caps on the screen.

The tech support was while trying the sky router, after spending hours on the phone with no results he then threatened to cancel his subscription (still within his cancellation period) it was then he was given his user/pass!

All security options have been tried... wap, wep, off. Sky finally decided it was his Toshiba wireless adaptor setiings at fault & he should contact Toshiba???

He told me ipod but you could well be right!

Ideally, using the sky Netgear would be the best option but linking the Belkin is an option if it's workable.

The tech support shouldn't have done it to be honest, it's something we have been told time and time again we should not even entertain but if CST are being told something else then that is up to them.
You should be able to link the Belkin to the Sky router, you will need to turn certain things off on one of the routers (DHCP) but it is do-able.

      Thanks for the reply.

While I understand the basics of networking (& I mean basics), configuring one router to connect through another is beyond me.... a little more info would be great

Re: Can't connect wirelessly to Sky router.

Sounds like a simple (?) wireless encryption or range/reception issue.

For the former turn off wireless encryption in the router.

For the latter test with computer in same room as router and experiment with different channels (avoiding those used by or adjacent to neighbouring wifi)

Also relocate cordless phone base or video sender away from router or computer.

As a last resort connect the Sky router to the phone line and the Belkin to the Sky unit by ethernet cable. Disable wireless in the Sky unit. Turn off DHCP in the Belkin and set a fixed IP address (that doesn't clash with the Sky unit). There's a guide to using a routers as a simple wireless access point (which is what you'd be doing with the Belkin) on netgear.com

      Many thanks for your replies.

A quick question.... is it possible for Sky to update the netgear firmware remotely?

They can and probably already have updated your Sky router -- new firmware is V1.03.87

Re: Can't connect wirelessly to Sky router.

I had problems with my Sky provided Netgear router and wireless. While I could get connected, several times a day the connection would drop and have similar symptoms to how you describe above.

The only fix I found was to stick a Linksys WAP to it and turn off the wireless on the Sky router.

I'm not too confident with the modified hardware that Sky provide, the wireless almost seems to have a mind of it's own at times.

If you've given up with trying to resolve the wireless settings on the router then take a look on Ebay for a cheap Linksys (or similar) wireless access point. They are much easier to set up for this sort of thing than putting two routers together. You should be able to pick one up cheap enough without having to head out to PCWorld or similar and paying over the odds.

Still NO solution from Sky! Still not fixed!
