      Update on this,

The internet connectivity has worked since the engineer was reported to have visited my local exchange or whatever it was they did. I'm happy there. However the other problem with the Sky provided hardware is still here. It just cannot provide a reliable wireless network and I'm still having to use the DIY solution that I mentioned above to make everything work. By doing this I can use my connection, but it's annoying having 2 devices where just one should work. Sky said they'd sent out a 3rd router to me, but it never turned up, when I called them they asked me to give it time. Several weeks later still nothing.

So, problem 1 sorted, problem 2 ongoing - see signature....

Still NO solution from Sky! Still not fixed!

Problem 2 still here, no third router ever turned up sadly, so I guess I'm stuck with my DIY fix. It does the trick, but it's kind of annoying that Sky couldn't solve this problem and that I had to solve it myself.

After reading a thread on here about how a non-Sky router has sped up someone else's connection I'm tempted to try that if I can find a spare router and see if these problems go away. If so I'll report back and let you know, if I can find a spare router to test this with.

i really don't see why you don't just use powerline adapters - SO the right choice in this situation...

Because I don't have any power points in my garden or conservatory. It also limits me to where I can sit in rooms where I do have power points. It's not the right choice in this situation as I am using a laptop and want to enjoy the freedom that wireless networking gives me, I don't want wires everywhere and I like to use my laptop around the house and garden.

Re: Anyone else get major outage yesterday?

just qiuck question have you set yr addon rounter same channel as the sky rounter was ?? if it diffent it might be interferance, when i first set my rounter up in new house my wireless kept droping out or going really low connection speed ie 11, i downloaded "wirelessmon" and found out that not only there over 10 networks in my range but next door network was same channel as my and every time they turned theres on (they turn everything off when going out) bang i had problems so i change my rounter to an free channel(most of the network in range was 6 or 11)to far as possable from next door and im not having anymore troubles.

its worth looking into i guess .

Re: Anyone else get major outage yesterday?

The device I am using is a wireless access point plugged in to my router, it's not a second router.

It's set to the same channel as the Sky router was before I turned the Sky wireless off. I know I am the only one using this channel within range of my house as I used Vistumbler to carry out part of my checks before setting this up.

There wasn't any interference with the Sky router. I know this because I was monitoring it for a while before I set this new setup up. Since doing this there's still been no interference.

I think the problem with the wireless network was to do with something that Sky have done to the firmware on the router. I'm not sure what, but since turning the wireless on the router off it runs much smoother and doesn't have any problems at all.
