      Broadband is slow and unreliable

      Hello there,
      I'm signed up to the 16mb package (or at least that is what I am paying for) however I can only ever get speeds of around 4-5mb. I also suffer at least nightly connection drop outs.

      I've only ever had Telewest cable broadband before so I don't know what to expect but this seems very poor.

      I've tried swapping the filters and different phone sockets in my house.

      Some info:
      • I have a black Netgear modem/router with no model number on it.
      • DownStream Connection Speed 5024 kbps
      • UpStream Connection Speed 768 kbps (these often fluctuate)
      • Line attenuation downstream: 45 db
      • Line attenuation upstream: 13 db


      Any advice would be much appreciated! Is it worth contacting Sky regarding this - or will they just fob me off with 'UP TO 16MB' rubbish?

      Hi the package you are on is up to 16mb . The speed you are able to acheive is dependent on line conditions and in your case line attentuation (distance from the exchange) . There is not much you can do about the latter saving moving nearer to the exchange. You may want to try a hard wired connection from your test socket which is behind the master socket for a more accurate download speed. Though i suspect you will not get much more from your connection.

      With your att and good line conditions you should be good for around 8 meg. As pp says try a connection directly in the test socket which will eliminate any potential probs with internal wiring. If you could post your router stats from both it would be helpful.
