      SkyBB Mid Question

Hi to all, new member here(lamb to the slaughter!). I've got a few queries regarding my Sky BB package.

As you can see from my stats(near the bottom) it's only showing as a 2mb(base) speed that i'm receiving from the exchange, but im paying for Mid(which is 8mb). They've told me i can recieve a maximum of 4mbps.

I've re-wired my master socket(using all guides i've found via this forum), i've also tried a filtered face plate. I've done tests with the test socket also, and i'm getting exactly the same speeds, attenuation and noise margins in the test socket as i am with a wired in extension to my upstairs bedroom and the master socket itself. I don't use wireless, everything is connected by ethernet cable to my PC from the router, i've even isolated the wireless signal as i don't need it.

I did some tests from the test socket this evening and i had some crazy results like 32617 downstream and around 300 upstream, but my router stats were exactly as below. I just figured the daytime drinking probably wasn't such a good idea.

I've included my router stats(Sagem F@st 2504, simple stats only), and the stats i got from pinging the bbc. All i'm really after is an idea from some more tech savvy people as to what could be wrong with my wiring/router or if Sky are capping my line.

If i've missed out any valuable information, please let me know.

      Thanks in advance

with a NM of 16db it possible that sky have capped you based on the quality of your line BEFORE you did all the upgrades.

You'll need to call them and tell them that you have fixed your line issues and can they remove the cap.

Thanks for the swift response! I'll get onto them either tomorrow or monday, as i'm not in a total rush to get it sorted out.

If i get any changes i'll post them here.

      Thanks again

      Re: SkyBB Mid Question

but your line attenuation is 55db so maybe that might be having a effect?

are you sure you wired everything up right in your socket?

and you have a noisy line 16.6db

so that could be another factor?

for atten of 55db, you should get 4-5Mb.

The higher the NM figure the better and suggests that sky have capped the connection down to 2Mb. When the cap is lifted the NM will drop and the speed will go up.

Definately on Mid. It comes up on the bill.

Although this morning i recieved an email from Sky:

Thank you for contacting Sky Broadband Technical Support.
I can assure you that as previously advised, your Max delay setting has been reduced to 8. I have had your line configuration checked, and I can confirm that the adjustments were made. However, even though it has been adjusted, this does not guarantee a difference in your ping times. If your ping times have not been reduced, then unfortunately there is nothing further we can do.

I tried to perform some tests on your line, but was unable to detect an internet connection on your line. Can you please ensure that your broadband box is plugged in and switched on at all times until the issue is resolved, as to allow any of our teams to work on your line. [/B]

All i'm really curious about is, if i'm on Mid, my router should be showing up as 8096(i think) downstream, but i'm still showing 2048 which suggests to me that i've been capped, if ever upgraded to Mid at all. If i can only recieve 4 - 5 mbps on my line, would Sky setting it to 8mb from the exchange cause problems for my line, or would i just receive whatever the line can give me?

Unfortunately for me, Sky sold my dad the dream when he re-subbed to get Sky+, although i appreciate watching NHL in my room in peace, the internet is below par.

I will take some pictures of my wiring at some point today, because the outside line looks as if it runs into a spur box(or something like that) which then runs down into the master socket... i'm not an engineer so i don't know what's best to have.

Thanks for all the help guys, i'll try to give you as much info as i can rather than make vague, short posts

      IW

      Re: SkyBB Mid Question

well, you won't sync at 8096 as your attenuation won't allow it, best to expect is around 4-5Mbps...

if you're 100% on Mid then Sky have capped you down so you're better off calling and get CST to do the changes on the phone so you know they've done the right thing...

      Re: SkyBB Mid Question

More fun with Sky. I receive a phone call this morning and according to the guy on the phone he can't even detect a connection on the line...

He was kinda baffled when i said i'm online right now browsing. He also informed me there's been no connection on my line for the last 5 days, to which i told him can't be true because i've been off work for the last 9 days playing XBOX, PC and browsing online etc.

The plot thickens a little more, but my confidence in Sky is thinning out.

      Re: SkyBB Mid Question

I've found an image of the junction box inside my front door to my house. I'd have taken a picture, but installing my camera is causing problems.

      http://www.telephonesuk.co.uk/images/80a.jpg

That is exactly what i have at the top of my door as you enter my house...

After more browsing, i've re-wired my junction box 'correctly'(it was god awful!) and i'll be calling Sky back around 11pm cause i can't get through to CST due to lots of traffic.
