Filters checked and in place? This sort of issue when phone in use would point to either filters incorrectly placed, faulty filters or possibly something wrong at exchange.

If it is not a filter problem it is quite possibly a) a bad joint in the phone line which is often difficult to detect and fix. or b) a faulty phone, which is easy, try another phone

I don't think this would make any difference, the number you get for the Home Hub is like VoiP, it is simply using the phone over the internet and has no connection with your home number.

If you do have noise on your line from the TEST socket, report it to BT as a 'noisy phone line' fault. If it effecting the voice part of the line then they must fix it. Be careful though, you must check it from the TEST socket to isolate any internal wiring, as if the fault is there, it will leave you with a large bill.

You can run a line test from the BT website, takes a couple of mins but you get a response pretty quickly afterwards.

You can run an online check from here-
      BT.com | Personal | Your account

Make sure you do it from the Test socket, so that only the main line is checked.
