      Terrible downstream

Basically i have terrible downstream atm

I am on the connect package and i on speedtest.net i get 193kbs down and 319 kbs up

I am around 930 metres from myexchange (as the crow flies).

I also get constant packet loss on counterstrike source servers which ranges between 10 - 50 and makes the game unplayable

web browsing is slow as is downloading and this has occurred as of Thursday daytime

I have manually updated the firmware of my router Thursday night but to no avail same problem occurs

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 6016 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 20.0 db 11.5 db
Noise Margin 14.1 db 23.0 db

now the downstream syncing level atm is 400 kbs more than i have got since i have been with sky and my downstream has also increased a little im constantly checking my router stats and often rebooting it

basically any one had similar problems with shocking downstream and have any explanation or a solution I have tried all the face plate malarkey to no avail

I have also put in an e-form but if i knew the exact problem a quick phone call would resolve them

      any help is greatly appreciated

      Nathan

      Re: Terrible downstream

On Connect your are actually on BT's ADSLMax. This has a training period of 10 days during which time your sync will change and may even drop out. This is really the poor relation of Sky's LLU packages. With your attenuation your sync speed should be much better, but that may come when your line is fully trained. Boot each evening to allow the router to resync with the exchange.

Your poor download speed is a different matter and may have nothing to do with the exchange end. Download and run TCPOtimiser this will optimise your PCs setting. Use 8000 as your first 'slider' speed and read the instructions given with the tool.

sorry i didn't make this clear ive been on sky broadband more or less since its release and this has only just happened as of Thursday

also this happens on any pc at my house this includes packet loss on CS:S servers and slow web browsing

Im pretty sure as ive done nothing to my setup at home that this has anything to do with my end

      Re: Terrible downstream

That's OK, I would still advise running TCP Optimiser, it can only help.

Also have a look at my post #5 in This thread and follow my advice there. This only works with Connect.

      @samperry209
As you are on a different package from the OP you would be better starting your own thread. Include your router stats with it.

      Re: Terrible downstream

I don't think you will get much joy ringing BT, they are generally not interested in broadband problems. They will only take action if it is requested by the ISP, in this case Sky. You could try ringing them and going through the rigmarole and see if they will order a health check on your line.

There is one other point and that concerns the firmware of the router. It may not fix the problem completely, but upgrading to the latest firmware may help. As your exchange has not been unbundled I would think it may be one of the last where the firmware will be upgraded automatically. You will find the new firmware with instructions on how to apply it in this post-

      Re: Terrible downstream

      My firmware was already updated

OK according to speedtest my downstream is up from 100-200 to 2500kbs

What actual download from a really good mirror should i be getting

Prior to this i was maxing out from rapidshare at 500kbs but at the moment its barely doing half of that which does suck

My loss problem is sorted and for the time being im happy with that css and ventrilo are now usable
