      Re: high ping

Ping stats are funny old things, they really shouldn't be in the two-digit ranges, but there is simply too much network "stuff" between endpoints these days.

      --- bbc.co.uk ping statistics ---
278 packets transmitted, 278 packets received, 0% packet loss
      round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 32.348/33.836/65.210/1.987 ms

      Virgin Media (20Mbps cable)
      --- bbc.co.uk ping statistics ---
46 packets transmitted, 46 packets received, 0% packet loss
      round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 9.336/12.582/23.294/2.840 ms

Now thats much more like it

The 20Mbps is not going to make much difference to the ping timings, certainly not reduce by two thirds! The culprit seems to be the DSLAMs and how they're set up with [relatively] huge delays (38.023ms first hop vs 8.363ms first hop with VM)

      Re: high ping

Just activated on Sky Broadband a couple of days ago. I've always had a problem with a long line to the exchange so don't expect brilliant figures, but you'll see from the attached that the biggest delay is in the first hop. Is this acceptable? My router is on an extension socket with a filter and directly connected to my PC. If I connect the router to the main socket with a faceplate filter and connect the PC by wireless would that help?
