      Evening Disconnects

Hello all, only 2nd post (1st was in the hello forum) so pls be gentle

I have recently been activated with Sky BB Base and seem to have a small teething problem. The connection seems to drop on an evening.

It works fine during the day, then for some reason during the evening the router seems to drop connection to Sky anytime between 6pm - 10pm. Usual tests show everything is ok from my end, laptops are running fine, everything works ok until the router drops the connection.

I thought I'd ask here before contacting Sky. Has anyone else experienced anything similar?

      All ideas welcome.

      Re: Evening Disconnects

You will need to post your router stats as it may be a line issue. How many telephone sockets have you got on your line and are you using your main socket for the router? Also is everything plugged into the telephone lines via the provided filters?
Also are both PCs on wireless or ethernet??

Thanks, how do I get the router stats?
Just the one telephone socket is in use with a filter plugged into it. Both laptops are run wireless but the problem occurs on ethernet too. They work fine until the connection light turns amber and disconnects.

      Re: Evening Disconnects

as mentioned above, you need to rule out internal wiring. to do this you can use the test socket(see first link in my sig)

also have a read of the 3rd link in my sig ther is a better explanation (it is to do with line noise, which will get worse at busy times like between 4pm and 10pm when most people get home and get on the net)

you may also want to have a look at the cabling and faceplate forum for tips on how to improve your wirirng

Thanks. I know the wiring is ok as Broadband has been running on there no problem for a number of years.

Depending on the provider some ISPs are not that fussy about line conditions, some are unfortunately. We need your router stats to be able to see what is happening.

      Re: Evening Disconnects

Hi, sorry for the delay. I ended up contacting Sky last night who said there had been problems at the exchange. However, I continued to have problems this morning but it seems ok at the minute (don't want to tempt fate though).

      Here's the router stats;

Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 7578 7384 0 74 434 04:13:09
      LAN 100M/Full 460 0 0 3 0 04:15:17
      WLAN 11M/54M 7933 8167 0 447 77 04:15:04
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2048 kbps 384 kbps
Line Attenuation 54 db 15.5 db
Noise Margin 1 db 13 db

I hope the above makes sense.

Also for info; I am 2.52km from the exchange as the crow flies.

      Thanks again.

      Re: Evening Disconnects

could you do a set of comparison stats from your test socket, you low noise margin would indicate to me that you have some noise on you line

Sorry to sound silly, just to clarify. Do you want me to put the router into the test socket on my master box then repost the stats?

^^ Yep (with a filter), when you take the faceplate off, any extentions you have should stop working (just in case others are using other phones, you would not want to cut someone off)
