Unhappy My Flatmate leeches all the speed

      Hi,

I am with SKY and using Netgear DG934G router. My flatmate uses torrent, p2p downloaders and leeches all the speed. She isn't much bothered though I let her know that it takes too long for a page to load on my laptop.

I cant raise my voice as she owns the flat and I share the rent and expenses with her. I would like to know,

      1. Is there any program/software to share the speed equally from the router?
      2. Is there any port blocking facility with this router?
      3. Any idea, you could suggest me?

      Thanks.
      Vish

I believe that in wireless the client with the best reception tends to hog bandwidth -- try subtly angling and swivelling the router's antenna so that it points to your computer.

Alternatively link your computer in by ethernet OR add a second wireless access point (an old 11g wireless router from a car boot sale will do) linked by ethernet cable to the sky unit.

Most p2p software clients like utorrent allow you to limit the download and upload speed in the options without knowing which client they are using its difficult to advise what to change

You would need to borrow your mate’s laptop to make the adjustments in the settings

Id disagree with that...it depends what shes downloading....its not the wireless signal thats being hogged but the actual throughput.

Using a better adapter might improve your chance of getting your fair share. Something like This may help. Having an external aerial means you can plug in a more powerful one, if you need it. I don't think there is any doubt, the biggest fattest pig will gobble up most of what is going.

I agree with toby theory it’s not the wireless connection at fault.
It’s the torrents connecting with many peers and max-ing out the connection speed probably on the download side...

      ^^^^^^^^^^^^
That's true. Peer to Peer should be renamed Pig to Pig in my opinion, especially where a connection is supposed to be equally shared.

However with a more powerful connection the OP could connect to torrents/P2P herself and give her flatmate a bit of her own medicine.

If she using wireless connection to your broadband then you just need to enable the wireless Security Options WPA-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key) in the router. You should have got a card with the router with the details on it.At the end of the day her actions with psp could get you in big dodo so cut off as soon as possible.

I think the broadband is shared, as well as the flat
