Question My stats after 1 day on Max...what do peeps think?

      Hey,

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8096 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 23.0 db 13.5 db
Noise Margin 14.4 db 11.0 db

Did a speed test this morning:-

I'm 721m away from my exchange.

      My exchange handles:-

      ADSL available at ~6.5Mbps
      BT Total broadband
      TalkTalk LLU (8M is free)
Sky LLU (2M is free, 8M is 5pm)
      AOL LLU (10pm discount)
      Pipex broadband
      Plusnet broadband
      Tiscali broadband
      Tiscali TV
      And many more...

      ADSL2+ available at ~16Mbps
      Be Unlimited
      O2 broadband
      UK Online (incl 20M packages)
Sky Max (LLU) (16M for 10pcm)

      Cable services available
      Virgin Media broadband (20M)
      Virgin Media digital TV
      Virgin Media phone

      What do you all think?

Should I be getting more greater speeds?

      Any help appreciated.

      Regards,

yep, you should get better speeds than that.

before we go on about GDMT (which you are on) and ADSL2+ (which you should be on), your speed test is poor for your connection at the moment.
could you do a test from the skyuser speed test (in left panel) and post back the results

also could you confirm if wired or wireless

At that closeness to the exchange and those stats yes, you should be doing an awful lot better than that.

If you look around this forum there is an entire section dedicated to fault-finding. Chances are your internal wiring is not all that good. Try plugging the router into the test socket on your master socket if you can. If that improves things then most likely your internal wiring. If not, it is likely to be something in the wiring out to the exchange and you'll need to get Sky involved at some stage......

That speedtest is a bit dire too!

I'm ~2Km from the exchange, routinely get over 10Mbps with much higher attenuation and lower NM than you have!

I am using the wireless function on the router.

Sorry, i've been on a really old 512k speed with Orange forever, and just migrated to SKY and MAX...so it's all new!

Your gonna have to explain, sorry

can you try a wired test ? you would see much better results

if not, experiment with different router positions and try changing the channel in the router.

your stats show you are connected at 8meg with a healthy noise margin of 14, this will be because you are capped on the GDMT mode, sky seem to do this quite a lot now (unsure why), you will need to either send an email asking for your speed to be looked at (moving from 8meg GDMT to 16meg ADSL2+) or you could phone in and try to get past T1 who will have to go through all of there scripted sheets before they pass you to CST (CST are the ones who will be able to make the changes on your line)

No probs ... Your BT Master Socket is the first one in the house from the wires in the street. Hopefully it is one of the newer style - the faceplate looks like it is in two halves (it is) and if you undo the two screws in the lower half you can pull it away and behind that is the "Test Socket" into which you can plug your Sky router. This has the effect of isolating (disconnecting) any internal extension wiring, if you have any, from the BT line.

Having done that, if your speed, attenuation, noise margin stats improve then the fault is most likely somewhere in your internal wiring.

Can you also confirm that every single thing plugged in to the phone socket/s is done through an ADSL filter, including your Sky satellite TV box. If anything is on the line that is not passing through an ADSL filter then you're not going to get anything like optimum performance, if any at all!

Re: My stats after 1 day on Max...what do peeps think?

Find the Master socket in your house, it is usually the first one on the line coming in from outside. Look at the front of it and if it has a horizontal joint across the face, carefully unscrew the 2 screws and remove it. Behind you will find another socket, this is the engineers or Test socket. When the face plate if off, check that you have no dialling tone on any of your extensions. Plug your router into this socket using a filter and post your stats from there.

If there is not a horizontal split in the faceplate, unplug everything you have plugged into extensions and plug the router in to the master faceplate using a filter.
