      new user - broadband help

      Hi guys,

I had a sky router arrive in the post last week and our "estimated activation date" was yesterday, but the router doesn't appear to be working.

I plug it in, hook everything up, and switch it on. We get the power light at the top, and the PC-connected lights at the bottom (we're connecting two PCs, hardwired). I *think* the test light flashes maybe once, if at all, and then the |Wireless" light comes on (every light so far is green). Then the "Internet" light flashes rapidly for about five seconds, but it's orange, not green. Sometimes the light will go off again, other times it'll stay on, but stay orange.

I wondered if the light was supposed to be orange instead of green so I powered up my PC and my system tray says "Connection Established" but I'm assuming that's the connection to the network/router, but I can't access the internet.

Do you think my line hasn't been activated yet?

I'm currently running off Linux on this old PC, but the other PC (XP) isn't getting any internet activity either.

Do any of you guys know what the problem could be? Thanks.

I would say no. But if the router is connected to your PC try accessing its configuration pages - Open your web browser of choice and type http://192.168.0.1 into the address bar and use the username/password of admin/sky and see if you have a connection.

Failing that simply call Sky and ask why you've not been activated yet.

try setting broadband up with hardwire connection with one computer first using the get strated cd supplied with router, once hopefully you get this one connected you are then able to create a multiple pc network either wireless or hardwire

      best of luck

You wont have to use the start up CD to activate your connection. Normally Sky give you an activation date as a guide in some cases in can take a little longer. You may want to try to connect just by using 1 computer, but it looks as though the line hasnt been activated yet. I would give it until Monday and then call them.

If you have a steady orange light then the Router has 'sync'd' with ADSL (if flashing orange, it is 'negotiating' ADSL connection.)

It goes green when you connect to the ISP (in this case Sky)

When you get the steady orange light, type in "192.168.0.1" in your browser. If asked for username type "Admin" and password as "Sky" (all these without the ")

That will get you into Router interface. If not already there, click mouse on the Maintenance tab then on Router Status.

On this page, you should see that you are conncted to ADSL by looking at Modem menu...shows connection speed, etc.

Two items above that is ADSL port. If you are connected it will show your IP Address. If not this will be blank.

Go to bottom of page and click on Connection Status (its in red) then clcik on connect. If you are successful, it will show IP address and 'Success' on the Authentication and Negotiation section.

      Hope this helps

Re: new user - broadband help

thanks a lot guys. We actually got some connectivity this afternoon, for about 2 hours, then it ceased again and hasn't come back online since. Our VirginMedia cable broadband gets disconnected on Wednesday, so I hope this one is sorted out by then. I'll call them Monday if it's still not working right... Thanks a lot

If the amber light is solid amber and you have a v2 router then that means that the router does not have an ip address and could be losing it all the time so what you need to do is call sky but first log into the router status page and do a sky test and tell me what the error code is.

this is the same fault I had with my sagem v2. (connection for an hour or so then drop) the cause in my case was a defective RJ11 socket (line in). Try moving the plug and it may reconnect. I found that the noise margin would rapidly drop and the router disconnect with no internet/sync light. If yours just goes amber, then this is not the problem.
