      Angry Connection issues

      Hello All.

Hopefully somebody here will be able to help.

I am currently running a mac on my sky broadband via airport. i have had nothing but trouble with my broadband in terms of a slow speed and constantly dropping connection, having phoned sky the answer from technical help was "Phone apple!" I have also connected a windows laptop via wireless and network cable and have the same issues.

Anybody else suffer with this? Also Anybody here think they have a solution?

      Cheers

@richone54 - it'll be wireless if showtime81 is using "airport" which is Apple's brand name for all their wireless stuff.

@showtime81 - Just to offer confidence I am using a Macbook Pro via airport to my Sky V2 router (the black Netgear one) without any difficulties. But you'll need to get those stats from your Sky router over for folk here to look at.

When you say "slow speeds" and "dropping connection" do you mean that it is the Sky router that is dropping connection or is it that your airport link to the Sky router is dropping?

If its a wireless issue - have you tried changing the Wireless Channel Number to something other than its default - try 1, 6 or 7 (or 1, 7 or 13 for completeness). It could be another wireless router in the vicinity is conflicting with yours.

Do get those router stats over too.

Trying desperately not to look too geeky but ... Here's Apple's Airport wireless stuff

I've been having some fun, of late, remoting my HiFi setup from my study Mac Mini with iTunes using the Airport Express (now available in 802.11n grrrr I bought the 802.11g four days before the 'n came out!!!). It works a treat. Then a few days ago a friend of my lad turned up with his laptop - asked if he could use my WLAN, and a little while later him and my lad were playing music from his Vista PC with iTunes through my Airport Express! It was horrid, Garage House or House Garage apparently

      I digress

      Re: Connection issues

      Hi Both,

      Thanks for a prompt reply.

Its actually the internet connection that keeps dropping when I am wired or wirelessly connected to the router (pc and mac).

Will post the stats as soon as I get home tonight to test it out.

      Thanks a Million.

      Re: Connection issues

You should also be able to see from your router stats pages how long it has been connected since the line disconnect. Any idea how frequently the disconnections happen? Also, is yours a new black Netgear router or the older White one? The latter are prone to some problems with disconnections and is due a firmware upgrade sometime [everyone hopes] soon.

Possibly it is time to start looking around for a fault.

Is your router plugged into your master socket (the first one in the house from BT)?
Does it have a split faceplate i.e. can you unscrew the bottom half? If you do then behind it is a Test Socket - try plugging your router into that, reboot it and re-do the stats. If they improve the chances are it is something in your internal house extension wiring that is at fault.
Make sure, also, that every socket that has something plugged into it also has an ADSL filter inserted between it and the device. There should be no unfiltered devices plugged in to any of the extension sockets.

There is an explanation of the stats on this forum ..... here

      Re: Connection issues

you do seem to be connected at the correct speed for your attenuation, which may be one of the problems.
if you keep open the "show statistics" window (from the router interface)while browsing, do you notice the Noise margin dropping in the evening ?
