      Yep.

Rubbish, and if that was the case surely pinching a couple of meg off people who can sync at the highest speeds would be a fairer way of doing it.

Arrr, thanks for putting up with this guys and helping me.
Next time you ring, straight away ask for his/her fullname, if they give you the tripe again ask for their mnager ( who no doubt will be unavailable ) if so tell them you are going to take this further.

You will be assertive by the time weve finished

Re: Is my stupidly low speed a cap?

I noticed the values in the router stats change on my Line, is this normal?
Interval of 10 seconds and i get these changes. I am not sure what they mean so this may be pointless but worth a try:

I guess you mean the change in the noise margin field ? If so it is quite normal for this to go down at busier periods of the day.

Re: Is my stupidly low speed a cap?

Hmm, would it matter if i am using ADSL, ADSL2 or ADSL Max?

I did a checker thing and it says for ADSL, my exhange:

      * 1/2mb service not viable
      * 500Kbps/256Kbps available
      * ADSL MAX (upto 8mb) is available.

      and for ADSL2

We estimate your line is capable of between 2mb to 3mb broadband on an ADSL2+ service.

Just looking at this, it would seem that possibly i had ADSL2 and now have regular ADSL?
The cap is cut perfectly at 512 which is the speed stated for regular ADSL and before the speed was exactly around 2-3mb.
Ahhh! I never realised the massive amount of factors there to affect BB speed.

I wish we could tear it all up and get a simple new fibre optic network all over Britain like in Korea. -_-

      Thanks again everyone.

Re: Is my stupidly low speed a cap?

Nope, ADSL2+ is a nonstarter with your att. GDMT is capable of up to 8000kbps.
Try phoning after 10 or now as most people are watching the footy

Re: Is my stupidly low speed a cap?

Ok, i sent them a detailed email addressing my concern and i got a reply today:

Thank you for contacting Sky Broadband Technical Support.

I have checked your downstream connection speed and it is stable at 512Kbps. I've also raised this iss ue to the Customer Solutions Team (Ticket 668227).

In the meantime, please leave your Sky Broadband Box switched on and plugged into the main BT socket so we can run diagnostic tests on the line.

The factors that affect the speed of your broadband connection are:

      * Distance from the property to the telephone exchange.
      * Total length of the telephone cable (5294metres).
      * Quality and/or age of the telephone cable.
      * Any phone extension cables in use.
      * Line Noise margin (higher the figure the better and above 7dbs).
      * Line Attenuation (lower the figure the better but no higher than 60dbs).
      * The unlimited download facility is the main advantage of being on the Max Package.
Does this mean he will tell CST for me? Or do i have to phone them up and tell the guy my ticket number to talk to them myself?

It annoyed me how he said that i was stable at 512kb, because i specifically mentioned that the line was stable at 512kb and it could take more.
Oh well, getting somewhere atleast - thanks to you guys!

Re: Is my stupidly low speed a cap?

The e-mail might be better worded, but they are just confirming what you said about the speed. As you have a ticket number then they must have rasied it with CS.
Comparied with some e-mails I have seen from other ISP's (BT are the worst) this one is full of information.

Re: Is my stupidly low speed a cap?

Looks like they have been reading the forum.

It does look like you can ring up and quote the ticket number and maybe get some joy from CST. Hopefully you will get someone who is prepared to try, rather than just give you the run-around. I don't know how long tickets remain alive, so don't waste time getting in touch with them.

Re: Is my stupidly low speed a cap?

OK, something changed - i was disconnected, upon reconnection i give you:
      A lower download speed!

Hmm, i kinda feel happy that something changed - my upload was increased but download reduced, i am hopeful that it may change again for the better?
