      Speed Reduction

      Hi,

For awhile now everytime i do any speedtest i get around 6.8mb connection.

Over the last few days it has been a pretty constant 3.5mb, about half of what I normally get and have been getting for the last 4 months or so since I jonied Sky.

      Stats:
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8160 kbps 416 kbps
Line Attenuation 32 db 7.5 db
Noise Margin 10 db 14 db

Anyone else having the same problem? I am on the Mid package on an LLU exchange.

      Re: Speed Reduction

Your router sync is fine and should be delivering the 6.8 you were getting before.

There are a number of reasons why the speedtest result may be significantly lower than the sync:

      In order of likelihood:

      • you are connecting wirelessly and have developed a poor quality connection (try wired)
      • you are using an overloaded test server (try Skyuser's)
      • your TCP/IP settings are incorrect (run TCPOptimizer)
      • you have a "benign" app running using bandwidth (e.g. Sky Anytime, BBCi etc)
      • someone else is using your bandwidth (e.g. someone on the LAN or rarely a wireless hijack)
      • you have malware on your system (run an on-line checker such as f-secure or Panda)

      Thanks for the reply.

Nothing has changed. It is a wired connection.

I work in IT and have already checked the things you mentioned.

Well something quite obviously has - nothing you've done quite possibly, but something has caused this drop.

If you've checked everything out as suggested then all I can think of is that your line is generating a very high error rate leading to large amounts of corrupt (and retransmitted) data. Looking at your stats, you definitely have some line noise though I'd be surprised if it was enough to have the effect you report..

      Re: Speed Reduction

I changed the micro filter and everything back to normal now, didn't think to check that. You just think that been working ok for awhile so it stays that way.
