Afaik, it could be one of two things, the first being faulty filter/ incorrect filter usage (test from the test socket should confirm) or a problem at the exchange (not sure of the techie term, but would need to be done by BT)

I am no telephone expert (where's Brian when you need him) but I think this is caused by a bad joint somewhere on the line. When you make a voice call a small amount of electricity flows down the line, this helps to 'tighten' the loose connection and lets the ADSL signal flow. It has been raised quite a few times on the forum and in nearly all cases the cause was a line fault. It is a job for BT or whoever you pay line rental too.

Re: odd one anyone heard of this

      Hi Charmed12007.
This is quite common. First is there any noise when using the phone (crackles pops) when connected to the test socket with a corded phone?.
If there is anything other than a low hiss, then report this to BT as a noisy line. If there is not any noise, then you will have to report this to sky and they will pass it on to BT. There is prob a poor joint somewhere on your line.
If you can it would be a good idea to check the connections on the master socket, to A and B , and make sure they are secure. If there are any joint boxes in the line then check those as well.
