Asked for a MAC....got cancelled instead!!!

I'm with AOL. And have been meaning to move to SKY.
I phoned AOL 27/02/08 and requested my MAC code.

Today was my 5th working day waiting.
Rang them again. They said BT was ceasing my phoneline.
Rang BT..they said that was a lie. There was no CEASE on my phnoeline.

Rang AOL back. They then told me the rep I had asked the MAC for had actually CANCELLED/CEASED my AOL broadband!!!!!

That means on 12th March. I'm not with AOL. YEY!
But that means until 12th I can't contact SKY. And then wait up to 15days to get SKY 'on'.

What do you do if a company cancel you instead of giving you a MAC.
AOL says I've got free dial up.
I'm double checking my D/Debit just incase.
Now i've to break it to a Call Of Duty 4 fan that his last days on Xbox Live are lost and he'll probably not be able to play online for the best part of a month.

I'm so flaming angry. It's so unfair!!!

AOL are part of the OFCOM voluntary Code of Practice agreement
      on MAC codes.
The article below gives you some options.

Re: Asked for a MAC....got cancelled instead!!!

The cease is already done. No way to reverse it.

I don't want anything more to do with them.
I will see if I can call SKY now and have it arranged to switch them on around 12th March when the cease happens.

Correct me if I'm wrong tho'. Aren't cease's INSTANT?

Re: Asked for a MAC....got cancelled instead!!!

If you really are "flaming angry" take OFCOM's advice:

There is a mandatory Migrations Authorisations Code (‘MAC’) Broadband Migrations Process which all Broadband Internet Service Providers are required to follow which sets out how they will handle customer requests to move from one ISP to another. This can either be through the MAC process or through a different process depending on the service involved - see How do I switch from one ISP to another? | Ofcom.

Where the MAC process applies, and your ISP does not issue you with a MAC, or refuses to accept a MAC, you should make a formal complaint to the ISP using the company’s normal complaints process. You can also contact Ofcom in order to register your complaint with us.

Where the problem remains unresolved, make a formal complaint to Ofcom.

Re: Asked for a MAC....got cancelled instead!!!

If AOL told be the line ceased in 12th March. (Even though I think ceases are immediate)...can I call SKY now and book for a date of installation just after 12th. Or do I have to wait until the line is free? And when will SKY start charging me?

I was teaching myself all about SKY b'band and all about b'band in general.
Told my other half we should be without b'band for a matter of hours.

He thought it was great. Now AOL have done this to me.
      It's not my fault though.

Re: Asked for a MAC....got cancelled instead!!!

I saw Ofcom's site. Register a complaint with AOL. They say there is nothing they can do. You can't reverse a cease. Now I just to get away. What's done is now done. What would Ofcom do for me/

you should be able to ring sky, and there is no need for "installation", you just plug th erouter in

you would not get charged for the BB until its active (afaik)

Re: Asked for a MAC....got cancelled instead!!!

In my experience, you have to wait until the line is free.
But phone Sky and see what they say.
I hope you do not get into a 3 way "hand washing" argument
      between BT, Sky and AOL.
Post again and let us know what Sky say.

Unless consumers complain in the agreed way between OFCOM and
the ISPs, badly behaved companies like AOL will just get away with it.

I am not psychic. I used to be with AOL.

Re: Asked for a MAC....got cancelled instead!!!

sky says even tho I'm in the proceedure of being ceased....I should be able to still get a MAC in order for Sky to switch me on as soon as the line becomes free after AOL service has stopped.

Still gonna be on dial-up til then tho'.
