Unhappy highly inconsistent performance on SkyConnect

      Hi All

Although this is my first post I've been a user of this site for a while and have found it very informative & helpful, so thanks to everyone who contributes towards it!.

I've been having performance problems with my SkyConnect broadband connection for a couple of months now and its really starting to irritate! I was hoping to grab a forum opinion or two so I can decide what to do next (jump ship, upgrade, etc..).

The main problem is massive changes in the speed of the service; at best I have got 6MB from speedtests (last decent result yesterday morning) and at worst I get less than 1MB (one just before posting this!), its been a similar story since the start of the year. Apart from the generally slowness which makes stuff like streaming very painful I'm also finding that my latency in online games is dreadful, virtually unplayable at times. Is the problem likely to be my exchange or the Sky ISP, I've grabbed my router stats and to my untrained eye they seem pretty good.

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated!

      Cheers, Ade!

Hi Connect is a refurbished BT product that suffers from port throttling, its no surprise that your last speed test this evening , at a busy period shows a severe drop. You may want to try connecting directly to the test socket behind the master socket to see if this increases your speed somewhat.

Hi, yeah I've tried the test socket, made no difference to performance. Do BT do throttling and traffic shaping ? I thought that would have been the ISP, in this case Sky ?

      thanks

Sky don't throttle their LLU service, but BT do on all wholesale products - Connect included

so you think my poo speeds are down to traffic management by BT ? I'm gutted .. I think I'm right in thinking this means that simply switching ISP would not help unless I go for a LLU service.

Re: highly inconsistent performance on SkyConnect

it could be - and yes it'd only be worth moving to a service which doesn't throttle, i can't say which others don't as i don't know but Sky don't (at present)

Re: highly inconsistent performance on SkyConnect

As my exchange was unbundled in July last year I decided to upgrade to Max and try and kick start a migration away from Connect. Everything on Sky's system tells them the service is available, according to the last rep I spoke to there is plenty of space on the exchange yet I am being told that they are unable to migrate me across individually and they can only do "bulk" migrations so I have to wait until Sky decide to do one (they cant give me any timescales).

Just wanted to check this sounds right and that I haven't been fobbed off.

      Cheers

Re: highly inconsistent performance on SkyConnect

As you are on Connect Sky will look to move you onto their systems as soon as the system is ready, this will be done automatically and in mass as that way Sky only need to get BT to send an engineer into the exchange once.
How long have you been on the BB service? If its near a year you may have a bit of leverage to get things moving by stating you want to cancel as you are not being migrated on to the servers when you are asking to be shifted.

Sky for all their faults do not usually take 7 or 8 months to migrate to their system. How much are you paying? If it is 17 pm, phone them and tell them you want a discount as through no fault of yours, you are being forced to use Connect when Sky has been available at your exchange for over half a year. If you are on the 5 deal, use the Kana form to keep reminding them that you have been waiting months to be transferred and are becoming really upset at the poor service you are receiving.

Re: highly inconsistent performance on SkyConnect

thanks guys, I've been on the service for just over a year now, only paying a fiver a month - its been great until Christmas when the problems above started. The exchange was unbundled back in July last year.

I'll try the form approach first, then see if threatening to leave makes any difference.
