Connection problem - frequent intermittent disconnection

Setup: 8MB connection with Sky, connected via Homeplug system and ethernet cable to PC.

Problem: intermittent disconnection from internet. Fixed by going to router webpage, clicking connection status, clicking disconnect then clicking reconnect.

This can happen at times every 5 minutes or so. Interestingly, sometimes downloads from non-web sources will continue throughout this.

      Any ideas? Many thanks.

If you could post your Router Stats (Show Statistics Button on Router Status Page) we could have a look and see if anything looks awry.

If you are remaining connected to the net while appearing to be disconnected, it could be a DNS issue. Try changing the DNS setting on your PC to OpenDNS. This has solved many "connection" problems.

Re: Connection problem - frequent intermittent disconnection

Your profile says Mid (8Mbps) but your upload speed (768kbps) suggests you may be on Max (16Mbps).

Having said that, your connection speed is very slow for your line attenuation and your noise margin is very high, suggesting that the line may be capped.

There is nothing there I can see to suggest why you should be disconnecting. How are you connected to the telephone line? Extension or master socket. Do you have a test socket you can try? Do you have ADSL filters in every extension that is in use, including Sky boxes connected to the line.

Sorry to ask so many questions but those stats are a little strange given the problem that you are experiencing.

Re: Connection problem - frequent intermittent disconnection

Have you complained to Sky, if you have it looks like Sky have just pulled their favourite trick and capped you. As has been said it looks like you are on Max, but Sky may have slipped up and set your upload too high. Even so you should be syncing at the maximum for your package, which you are not.

For your disconnection problem, have you tried turning off UPnP in the router, this can cause frequent disconnections on some routers. Open the router Status page go to the bottom left, click UPnP, then untick the box, click Apply and that's it.

Also try using OpenDNS the Sky servers are chronic.

Re: Connection problem - frequent intermittent disconnection

Tried turning off the UnP thing. .... no difference. Was going to try the OpenDNS... it asks me for dns addresses - what do I enter here ?

I am connected to the telephone line via a homeplug system - the router is connected into the (I think) master phone socked. The router is then connected to an adjacent power socket via the homeplug system. My computer then connects to another homeplug in another power socket via an ethernet cable.

Re: Connection problem - frequent intermittent disconnection

Setting OpenDNS in the router involves using the Telnet client, if you are happy with this and are using the white router, do the following-
      1. Start the telnet daemon using the Mognuts utility page
      2. Telnet to the router by doing Start->Run then typing telnet 192.168.0.1
      3. Type the following commands
        • nvram set wan_dns1=208.67.222.222
        • nvram set wan_dns2=208.67.220.220
        • nvram set wan_fix_dns=1
      4. Reboot the router

If you just want to set it up on your PC go to THIS page and follow the instructions for your OS.
