Correct! They only other thing you need to check is that the phone itself is not faulty. Try to or three different phones if you can, if the noise is still there the fault is in the main line. Also use plug in phones, some wireless ones create their own 'mush'.

EDIT - You can't go wrong now, you have the telecoms expert on the case

      Hi Philip.
Yes that would be fine, but as long as you use a corded (as opposed to cordless) phone thats o.k.
BT do not expect you to borrow or buy a phone just to carry out this test, so long as you have taken all reasonable steps to ensure the fault is not in your own wiring, thats all they expect.

Managed to borrow one and it is still the same.
One last thing, is it recommended tp remove the BB and the filters prior to the engineers arrival.

      Re: Slow or about right?

In the first instance I would. If he/she are the friendly type, you could mention that you have BB over a coffee, and as most engs also have it, they like to "compare notes" on differant ISP's. But let them concentrate on the voice fault as that is what they are there for. I'm sure the BB dropped connection is due to the same fault.

      Update

BT engineer have just left, they where unable to find a fault .

The mushy sound on the line was almost non existent, even my mate while on the phone to me said " your phone sounds clear now mate".

Before the BT guy turned up i had been investigating somewhat, i discovered that the noise would almost completely disappear with the Sky box disconected from phone line.

Had a look inside the Sky extension box, it is the type with a capacitor(I think) inside, the orange wire was connected, i disconnected it, it was after this that my mate called me and stated the above.

So as it stands, i still have the same or similar stats as posted at the beginning of this post.

The only other thing i had done was emailed sky via the web form asking them to help lower my pings, to my surprise the ping was a lot lower by Saturday morning, I guess they did their magic.

Looking at my stats would you say i am on G.DMT or ADSL.

      Todays stats.

      Router Statistics

      System Up Time: 00:34:48
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 87 77 0 23 28 00:08:24
      LAN 100M/Full 3819 3144 0 1338 222 00:34:44
      WLAN 11M/54M 445 0 0 55 0 00:34:31

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4608 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 26 db 7 db
Noise Margin 16 db 11 db

What about the noise margins are these good.

I don't quite understand how you heard the mushy sound in the Test socket and then it disappears when you 'fix' the Sky box. This would not effect the line when you are connected to the Test socket

Ah well, as your Bard says 'Alls well that ends well'

Beats the hell out of me too.

Maybe it was my super hearing and just the normal background noise found in cordless phones.

Any thoughts on the other points ie; the low downstream etc etc.

      Re: Slow or about right?

      Hi Philip.
This ring cap in the sky extension sounds odd.
Just check that when you remove the faceplate from the master, only the test socket works and all other phone sockets in your home have no dial tone.
Openreach should have done this as part of checks, but he/she may have missed it.
