      Help needed

      Hi there,

As a relative newcomer to Broadband I need some advice on a problem that has developed with our Sky Broadband.

Every time we try and open Internet explorer we keep getting the following message appear in a box:

The server (...www.google.co.uk...or whatever the web address is) at DSL router requires a username and a password. THere is a warning also saying that any information is sent unsecure.

We have only had the router around 3 weeks (I think its a black netgear one) and until now there has been no problem.

Should I follow the advice here: Username & Password from a Sky DG934G Router
or have I a far serious problem - virus etc?

      Please help!

      Re: Help needed

Its more likely to be an issue with the router or authentication of the router with Sky servers. Make sure you are plugged into your main socket with a filter, check that filters are in use where needed, if the problem persists you will have to call sky tech support.

Ok - I will try that. What filters should be used though (sorry if I sound a little daft - this is all quite new to me and I guess we all had to start somewhere!)

      Re: Help needed

Sky supply 3 filters with their BB pack. These should be used to connect every appliance you have connected to the phone line. This includes Digiboxes which are one of the worst culprits at creating noise on the line. Note that if the Sky installer connected your box with an extension, this is not a filter, it is simply a line splitter. In all cases the filter should be plugged into the socket first, then any appliance or extension plugged into that.

You should have your router plugged in to the Master socket for best results. These two Sections contain a wealth of information and are required reading for anyone with BB problems.

Thanks. I may try the reset button on the router too as like I say for around 3 weeks it has been working fine.

      Re: Help needed

Just found this post - exactly the same problem.

      Problems Sky Broadband Connection/Authentication

I shall give this a proper read and report the findings.

Just a quick question, can I just use another router!?

      Re: Help needed

The other thread was referring to the new routers, as you have the old type, I don't think you have the same problem. From memory, I can't remember this being raised about the DG834GT, but I may be wrong.

Details on how to use another router are in the Technical Section, but you should be aware this is against the T & Cs.

I think their profile is wrong.

      Re: Help needed

Ah yes, in that case he should report it as a fault to Sky. Apparently, some of these new routers have a bug which causes this.
