      Slow Download Speed?

Hey guys.. I am having Problems downloading files at the normal speed I am used to

I am supposed to have around a 3-4mb connection. That used to download around 400kb/s.

When i check the router it says I have:
      DownStream Connection Speed 3584 kbps
      UpStream Connection Speed 384 kbps

But when i download a file, it will download around 80Kb/s

I Ran a speed test and it says 2900/290kb/s

I am using a Wireless Card which did not cause any problems in the past

I called Sky up about it and they said that its showing I have the right connection speed so they Aren't eligable to help me..

Can anyone explain what the problem is? Thanks

      Re: Slow Download Speed?

Web sites tend to vary alot in speed due to the speed of the server and the load on it. I usually download at about 900kb but was trying to download a driver for my mates Acer laptop the other night and it was coming down at 30kb and took 30 minutes to download! Have you tried this test BT Openworld if its still bad you may have a noisey line, poor extension wiring causing problems or wireless issues, if using wireless.

      Re: Slow Download Speed?

The guy on the phone mentioned that downloading from different sites can cause a variation in the speed.. but this is literally every website.

      I can't get more than 100kb/s

As for the other things you mentioned, I've never had a problem like this in the past

I was having connection problems due to a mistake i'd made, so Sky Capped the line to test speed without reason. I called them up to take it off and they did so.

The problem has been around since then. That was a couple of weeks ago

what happens with a wired connection ?

also could you change your profile to the correct package (looking at your stats i would assume you are on the mid package)

      LISTEN TO THIS GUY!!

I migrated from Orange broadband (averaging 700bkps) to sky and started averaging only approx 100 kbps!

When with orange it was an 'up to 8 meg service'
Now with sky it is 'up to 16 meg service'

So im like ....this doesn't make sense...same as you called sky they won't help etc etc.

So i took the face plate off the master socket and plugged my Netgear into the socket (thus bypassing all extensions in my house).

Even though i did not have anything plugged into any of my extensions anywhere in the house i.e. no phone nor sky box plugged in etc, it dramatically improved the down and upstream i was getting.

So in conclusion, something to do with the way Sky's broadband acts, it doesn't like being part of a home network of telephone cables (even when router plugged into master socket).

So remove the network by taking the face plate off the main socket and plug your router into the master socket inside the main socket.

look at my speed now (below)

      Re: Slow Download Speed?

I would also like to mention that my house is a New house and only just been wired by BT and fully tested.

So it's not down to faulty home wiring...IT IS SKY'S DODGY BROADBAND

      Re: Slow Download Speed?

So you have changed your mind since THIS post

Your wiring may be new, but that does not make it top quality, the fact that you have an extremely good connection from the Test socket should make that obvious.

      Re: Slow Download Speed?

I'm not sure which package i'm on since I'm not paying for it, but I know it is 8MB but they said i can only recieve around 3.5mb

I tried plugging it into the master socket and it didn't really change

I've tried hooking it up with a wired connection and there's still no change

      Any other ideas?

      Cheers

      Re: Slow Download Speed?

When you say you are not paying for it, do you mean someone else is? If you were on the free package your maximum speed would be 2MB. Up to 8 costs 5 and 16 10.
