With all those extensions it could just be the "ring wire" creating the noise which is causing the disconnections.

I don't know how Sky can be sure that the master socket is in the hall but it would certainly be useful to know. Does it have a BT or Telecom logo on it as the master socket usually does. The only other way of telling is to unscrew the front and have a gander inside for the extra components in there.

Once the master socket is identified, many noise problems can be solved by removing the ring wire(s) connected to terminal 3, usually orange/white. These serve no useful purpose and can act as an enormous aerial for picking up interference.

The ethernet idea is still a good one and may solve the problem for you.

Re: Losing connection and need help!!

Had a wee look at the box in the hall and it does have a 'T' on it

UPDATE - (am almost scared to post this in cae I jinx myself!!) since I changed the DNS, I haven't lost connection - not once!!! Sometimes it seems as if it's thinking about it but no, the page loads!!! Am not entirely sure what DNS is but I care not a jot - I love it!!!!

Am going to keep an eye on things and then if the connection starts to go then I will open the box as you suggest and remove the ring wires and also get the ethernet cable running through from hall to bedroom...but fingers crossed that this has hopefully solved my problem - even if only for a wee while to get stress levels down!!!!

      Thanks again

just out of interest, would you be able to post some detailed router stats in the next few days

(see second link in my sig and look for the Mognuts utility)

only if you get a chance, may help if your problem return

      Absolutely...no problem!

Forgive me if this sounds like a silly question however, am I to install some kind of software to get the detailed stats?

Mognuts is a utility than runs from the router (not sure of the techie term), but it will not harm your router or PC in any way,
      just follow the guide below

      Mognut’s Utility
Go to the utility web site: Sky Netgear DG834GT utility version 0.4.
Click the “Get” detailed modem stats button and click “OK”.
Enter the router login user name and password.
At the next screen, click the back button on your browser.
      Click the “Download” netgear.cfg button.
What you do next depends on your operating system. On Windows XP, click the “Save” button to save the file to your hard disk. (If you click “Open”, you may find that the file association is one that doesn’t handle carriage returns the same way as the router, hence the reason for saying “Save”.)
Open the file in WordPad (not notepad).

Okay....I shall do that tomorrow...one last thing - do you want the stats at different times of day over the next few days or the same time?

Okay..thanks for help and here are stats as of now...have to say that I am not all that concerned about super fast (though quite clearly I'm not wanting dial-up times to load!!!) my main concern is realibilty.....

1 CRC and 1 error second in 4 hours is actually exceptionally good, as are your SNR and connection speed. It is difficult, looking at these stats, to see any reason for problems. You should be able to download at over 7000kbps and unless you have occasional noise spikes on your line, you should stay connected.

Maybe if you post your stats after running for over 24 hours, they may show something.
