      your internal wiring may be the problem, have a look in the cabling and faceplate forum for tips on how to improve

      (you may want to see if you can get the router to your master socket and see what you get from the test socket)

      OK, thank you for all your help. However, i have just checked to see where my master socket is, and the cable coming from my current socket goes out a hole in my wall, then upstairs into my loft, so i'll have to search for it tomorrow.

      ^^^ That could well be an old type master if the line comes in from a telegraph pole. Does it have a BT or Telecom logo on it? The only other way of telling is to remove the front and look for the additional components (capacitor, resistor and diode) that are not found in an extension socket.

      Yeah, on closer inspection the line does come from the telegraph pole. We just called sky and they came up with some **** about them doing maintenece in our area, so we'll just have to wait and see.
