Why would my noise margin drop so much?

      Hi

I have recently changed from Orange to Sky Broadband mid package. I have a query regarding the noise margin. I still use the same router and connections as before, Netgear DG834GT; my line is still with Bt so why would my noise margin drop so much and will this drop cause problems with connection and surfing.

I tried the Sagem router I was sent, changed filters, cables and still get very similar results.

I have tried rebooting different times of the day but the results again remain very similar ranging from 5.4db to 8.9db and 2138kbps to 2624kbps.

Is this a problem for Sky to sort out or Bt?

If someone can enlighten me with what I need to do I would appreciate it.

      Thanks.

Re: Sagem router has been cracked - take 2

Looks like you have a cabling issue.

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
      Connection Speed 3848kbps 384kbps
      Line Attenuation 56.0db 31.5db
      Noise margin 6.9db 13.0db

Quite clearly shows an increase in speed.

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
      Connection Speed 2624kbps 384kbps
      Line Attenuation 57.0db 31.5db
      Noise margin 6.8db 13.0db

they've changed cause you were severly capped by Orange - Sky's router will connect at the best speed it can at around an SNR of 7...Orange would seem to have limited you to your previous speed so it never changes and your SNR is sky high...

its nothing to worry about tbh...

Re: Why would my noise margin drop so much?

      Thanks for your replies.

Orange capped me because I refused to move to a higher priced package, so they reduced me from 1.1mb to 608kbps.

If I understand this correctly, as my speed has gone up the noise ratio has come down? Is the downstream noise margin of 6.8db perfectly normal?

      Cheers

      yep - thats it basically...

and yes its normal...should it start to drop too low then you may experience issues but so long as the setup your end is up to scratch then you should be ok. have a read of the sticky threads on the site and you'll hopefully get your head around it!!
