      Router Opinions please?

      Calling all IT Pro's...

Since moving from IDNet to Sky BB for economy reasons, I am rather unimpressed to say the least with the noddy router they have supplied. I'm a Systems Engineer, so in the past I've used a Cisco 837 which did everything I want and sat there gathering dust (I ran a sho ver just before I swapped the router, and it showed uptime of 49 weeks completely untouched).

Thanks to the tools others have supplied on here, I will be able to at some point replace the Sky thing with a Decent router again, however, I can't re-use my 837 since it does not support G992.5, and upgrading to an 877 is a tad expensive.

Can anyone recommend decent makes/models of router that will gather dust without tinkering/rebooting? My main concern is reliability secondary concern would be functionality.. Not fussed about built in wifi.. I've heard some good things about Draytek?

As a Systems Engineer you are obviously much cleverer about
      computer technology than I.
But did you read the Terms and Conditions about routers
      before joining Sky Broadband?

I have been on-line for 16 months using the White V1 router with
only minor hiccups. I guess like a million others I may just be lucky.
Or maybe other factors come into play.

Like you however, I also have a beef with Sky.
They are going to force a firmware upgrade on my router
without giving me the option to opt out.

      I believe in the cliché:
If it aint broke, don’t fix it.

      Murdock,

"But did you read the Terms and Conditions about routers

I did read the T's & C's thoroughly, and also perused this forum beforehand. On the basis of the fine work of Simon and others in reverse-engineering the passwords out of the routers, I decided to proceed with the broadband order (knowing I could change the router later if I wasn't happy). I know Sky may well terminate the service at some point in the future, but that's a risk I am happy to take.. At this point it seems fairly unlikely, and it's hardly the end of the world if they did.

"Minor hiccups" is exactly what I am trying to avoid, and was the whole point of this thread..

I hear Sagem make a rather good BCM6348-based router called the F@ST2504...

      LOL

Crikey.. you know I think that's awfully similar to the one Sky supplied to me.. Only it can't be the same because I've only had this thing 4 days, its already needed a reset to jog it back to life and its locked down so you can't touch any settings that are vaguely useful

      :-)

Guess I must also be one of the lucky ones, 16 months on the V1 router with no disconnections whatsoever ( apart from ones i've forced due to computer upgrades, mice etc )

No, no, no, that's an assertion that I'm not going to let you get away with. If your connection is stable, it will be because of one or more of these three reasons: (1) your attenuation is very low, resulting in you having a noise margin which is significantly better than 7dB, (2) you've been capped, again resulting in a more healthy noise margin or (3) your phone line's transmission characteristics don't vary a great deal over the 24-hour cycle.

I put a lot of effort into investigating the problems I had with the Sky DG834GT router, and I can say with absolutely certainty that the firmware on that router is flawed, and specifically, the router doesn't perform bit swapping properly. The consequence of that is that any line which has characteristics that make any significant demands on the routers bit swapping functionality, will have problems. Nothing at all to do with anybody fiddling with their router or not.

James, no disrespect but I'm assuming what he meant is that like me hes had no reason to change things coz its worked ok.
I agree entirely that the V1 firmware is flawed - it must be or they would not be taking so long to get the update out.
