The only people that will advise you to use the recovery tool would be Netgear support, you will never be told to use it by T1 as they will just replace the router if it is proven faulty. If Netgear support tell you to use the recovery tool then they will probably then talk you through getting it back to the current firmware level too after sorting out the initial firmware problem.

I wonder is they used this clause. If so others running game servers and such like, will have to keep an eye on their usage, or they may find themselves in the same pickle.

      From T & Cs
      (h) To protect our network and maintain quality of service for all our users we can temporarily or permanently control or restrict your online activities via Sky Broadband where such activities may have a detrimental effect on other customers’ quality of service and it is reasonable for us to do so (e.g. sending “spam” Messages (see Condition 4(b)) or hosting a website).

That's exactly what I thought, when I saw he posted about hosting a MAIL and WEB server.

If the web server hosted a lot of large files etc then his usage would certainly go up. But, I reckon it was the ports he might have been using (port 25 smtp). This port is blocked by LOADS of ISP's to stop spam. He might have even be relaying spam if it hadn't been configured correctly.

A lot of reasons why they might disconnect you. I honestly do not think they would disconnect you for using a different router.

I would say it is more likely that the OP was kicked off for abuse of the network rather than using own Router or Usage. Running a Game Server is not that demanding, but if it was a website offering downloads, this is more likely to use bandwidth etc and especially if the Mail Server had been compromised.

Think about it, the only other reason anyone has been suspended was for spam. (although this could have been a virus)

The more I see of Skys T&C's the more I dont like them
(and lets be honest I hadnt even bothered to look at them for something trivial like a net connection)

If you have a camera it might be serving a webpage for you to look at your camera remotley. Technically that is hosting a website, might not be on port 80/8080 but it's still serving web pages and thus is a website.

Lets say you had an open FTP for whatever reason, is that allowed?, Who knows I think is the answer.

What about running PTP clients, thyre all by default offering a service to others to download from.

Where is this rubbish going to stop with them?, I for one am concerned of what appears to be a restricted internet connection and I can only see it getting worse.

      Hi Slim

In all fairness, no one has yet been kicked off for breaching the T and C's

I think I have seen 2 reports of accounts suspended for Virus like activity. This is the same for any ISP.

The only other report I have seen is this thread.

Whether we like it or not, I think Sky have been pretty tolerant. Loads of people have posted that they have caned their connections as in over 250gb in a month and yet Sky have not enforced any restrictions.

Hence why I think this is an abuse case.

People have downloaded more than 250GB, in a month!?! What on earth have they been downloading, I wonder.

For some reason, it seems to be Linux Distros only

its quite easy to do now, especially with the sites that offer streaming tv quality video such as SKY and BBC, these services use quite a lot of GB's if using them regualrly and it will only increase when other tv stations etc offer the same video on demand services
