Ah, but (and this is weird as I didnt know lines have preferences) my line has never been able to handle netgear and sagems were almost as bad.

Given these are the only two routers sky offers, what would my move be? Change provider on that count that the supplied routers dont work (but we know other makes do such as Cisco, D-Link etc)?

If no support is to be offered then at least introduc monthly contracts. That way a person can move away to a provider willing to offer support (even if an alternative router is in use).

I guess there are just so many angles on this, and perhaps we may get these covered if we were to have a Sky/Skyuser user debate on the forums here. I dont mean the whole of skyuser, but say 10 individuals who would represent the view of the many, discussing it with sky.

i think that's the way things should go - monthly contracts...

will make life a lot easier and would help increase competition so users can get a good deal...

We have already asked Sky to consider having a 'Ask Sky Section' here on SkyUser, and initial responses were encouraging.

Hopefully once our contact returns to work, (may have already done so) we can build on our initial plans and bring this to fruition.

Sky were definitely 'Up for it' So I guess it's just a case of hang on in there.

      Interesting thought.

What's even more interesting, and maybe just coincidence, but within the results from our new SpeedTester, not one ISP's package, with a monthly option, is anywhere near the Top Ten for recorded Speed results.

Which would lead me to conclude, that if you do indeed want the best performance, then you should really be looking at a longer term contract. Although as above, it may just be a coincidence.

I think that is mere coincidence. Be, whoc look as though they are at the top, dont offer monthly contracts, but as per their conditions, they dont ask you to be with them for 12months, 18months or even 24 months either.

All they ask for is 3 months notice.

For our Be unlimited and Be pro products, there is no contractual period, we simply ask for 3 months notice in writing to cancel your contract without incurring any additional cancellation charges.

If you choose Be Value, your initial contract period is 1 year. After the first year, we simply ask for 1 months notice in writing to cancel your contract without incurring any additional cancellation charges.
Whats more, the ISP's featured as offering the best performance speeds are the same providers that have the biggest of the most up to date networks. VM with their fiber and cable, Be with LLu and up to 24mb, Sky with LLU and up to 16mb.

Other providers offering LLU are well known to limit the rate of their products in order to pack their pipes full of customers (in an attempt to make their business model more viable) and for the rest, they only offer BT products which has a maximum of 8Mb and to top it off has bandwidth restrictions also which often requires traffic management to be effective.

If anything, a provider giving monthly contracts has to work harder to keep customers happy, as they are not automatically locked into a contract for x years, and so keeping them happy becomes the number one goal instead of money making (not that this can be fully applied to sky as the service is cheap and the service has mostly been good, except for the equipment dilema.).

So effectively it is a 4 month contract minimum. Would it be fair to say?

If talking technicalities I would say no as you only need give 3 months notice, and as such you could cancel the day you signed up.
Other providers giving monthly contracts require 30 days notice but we dont effectively say the minimum contract length is 2 months do we

Unless you have need for some function not included with the Sky router, these days there is not much point. It would do no harm to plug it in and try it, it is always useful to have a spare in case your Sky one goes faulty. I don't think anyone here will tell you whether to use it or not It is really up to you, very few on the forum will stick their neck out and tell you to break the T & Cs. That would not be in the best interests of the Forum.

      hi all

ive been reading through and found alot of people have been useing their own router which is pointless why not just go out and buy a cable router and turn off the wireless on the sky router and use it as a modem and use your cable router for wireless. that way no-one can get kicked off and no hacking is needed and its hassle free with all the hacking and stuff.
