Sudden terrible speeds on connect ...

Three days ago my download speeds suddenly dropped and have stayed there (see attached picture of speed test). I've phoned sky and gone through the usual "unplug this, reconnect that" routine to no avail. She wanted to put me through to tier2 but I didn't have the time to wait so I got a ref number and am due to phone again today.

What I wanted to know is can anyone give me an heads up on what might have happened and where I should ask them to start looking. I've got 2 PCs connected to the service, one wireless and one plugged into the router. I've tried it with one or the other off at any one time, plugged the router into the test socket in the wall, tried another wire from the router to the socket ... I've tried all I can think of.

I'm on Connect because there are no slots available for the mid package at my exchange atm. However my line can handle upto 8meg but I've never got that, even when on BT. 3-5 has been the norm for this line. However, as you can see from the picture (this is after three tests this was the highest, some were sub-100) my speeds are way off what they should be.

      Any help is appreciated.

Can you copy & paste the figures from the "Show Statistics" window on the "Router Status" page of your router.

Yeah sorry, I'd remembered about doing that and was off doing it as you posted

      Anyhoo, here's what it says.

      System Up Time: 24:10:22

Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 1443664 1374005 0 3139 9840 24:09:43
      LAN 100M/Full 293459 238636 0 3547 466 24:10:18
      WLAN 11M/54M 1109618 1226087 0 6579 2765 24:10:04

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8128 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 29 db 7.5 db
Noise Margin 11 db 25 db

Can anyone explain what the line attenuation and noise margin actually mean?
      Thanks again.

Re: Sudden terrible speeds on connect ...

There is an excellent thread on the subject by Saturday here.

Basically you seem to have a very healthy line which is connecting at 8 mbps to the exchange with a good noise margin!

Try this link to optimise your PC's. If this doesn't work you might need to try and "retrain" your line.

I think this is done by introducing noise to the line, which you can do by plugging in a telephone or digibox WITHOUT an ADSL filter for a few hours. When that has been run for a while reconnect everything properly and see if things simprove.

Re: Sudden terrible speeds on connect ...

I'm 99% certain it's not my PCs (1% is you never say never where computers are concerned). Nothing has changed on the computers but suddenly the connection did.

I'll take a look at the thread and try the retraining you mentioned.

      Thanks for the help.

Re: Sudden terrible speeds on connect ...

I've done a trace route to TranceFM - Home - 24/7 Trance Internet Radio which is the site used at maidenhead (the recommended server on the speedtest). Here's the result.

      Tracing route to trancefm.co.uk [87.117.208.37]

over a maximum of 30 hops:

      1 1 ms 1 ms 1 ms NETGEAR Support Home Page [192.168.0.1]

      2 * 34 ms 33 ms lo2.dr8.bllon.uk.easynet.net [82.108.0.62]

      3 35 ms 34 ms 34 ms ip-89-200-130-35.ov.easynet.net [89.200.130.35]

      4 36 ms 35 ms 37 ms be2.er10.thlon.ov.easynet.net [195.66.224.43]

      5 37 ms 34 ms 35 ms ge0-1.linx.lon.rapidswitch.com [195.66.224.207]

      6 * * * Request timed out.

      7 * * * Request timed out.

      8 * * * Request timed out.

      9 36 ms 35 ms 35 ms ip01.server01.plesk.ukonlinehosting.com [87.117.208.37]

      Trace complete.

I'm ni expert but the three time outs don't look good. This provide any clues to anyone?

I get exactly the same result on that tracert but the speed test appears to work fine, returning the same as in my sig. I don't think that is connected with your problem.

Re: Sudden terrible speeds on connect ...

Go HERE and do an official BT speed test. You will need to put in your phone number then the username, the one hidden in your router. It is the MAC code of the router, minus the colons with @skydsl behind it.

You may have to make several attempts to connect as it is always busy. This will give you your Profile, connection speed and actual speed. Post the results.

Re: Sudden terrible speeds on connect ...

OK I've done the line retraining thingy but no change

I'm tryin the BT test now but as you've stated it's busy so may try later.

I think it's fair to say I've done pretty much all I can without phoning Sky back, which is what I intended. Best thing is to just bite the bullet and phone them. Wish me luck
