Well I left it plugged in all night with the phone not going through a filter (there was noise on the phone line) and even though the sync is slightly lower, it's not by much.

Re: Sudden terrible speeds on connect ...

Can I ask for peoples opinions on the line?

From the box just inside the window fitted by BT I have a line running to the main box in the living room (also fitted by BT). If the cabling from the window to the box on the wall was faulty, would the router still be connecting at 8meg as it is? If so, and it could sync at 8meg would a faulty cable cause the problems I have?

The only reason I ask is that it's the last think I could possibly do my end to fix it. I know somebody that can fit a new box but I'd have to pay him and I don't want to go that route unless people think it might make a difference.

      Cheers.

Re: Sudden terrible speeds on connect ...

As you surmise, it is unlikely to be a line fault if you sync at 8mb. Your figures in post # 19 also show that your profile and connection speed are OK, so don't waste any more time trying to retrain your line. Your stats show that you are connecting at a good speed with a healthy noise margin. You should easily be attaining a d/l speed of 6.5-7Mb, what are you getting now. Try it on the SkyUser Tester and let us know what you get.

Just to refresh, you have used the TCP Optimiser to check that your PC is properly set up, using this procedure-
      - Choose your maximum Connection Speed from the slider bar (8096 in your case)
      - Choose your Network Interface, or check to Modify All Network Adapters
      - Pick "Optimal settings" from the radio-buttons near the bottom of the program
      - Click on the "Apply changes" button and reboot

Re: Sudden terrible speeds on connect ...

Well now I'm confused. First of all, thanks for the advice on the line. I also decided to try the speed test you posted and got this

Your download speed is 2944Kbps. That is 1417Kbps below the average for Sky
Your upload speed is 368Kbps. That is 35Kbps below the average for Sky

Just short of 3 meg. Still short of what I should be getting but at 6pm it's more than OK for me. I've done nothing to my machine or the line in the house. So how it suddenly went that high I don't know. So I thought maybe it was the speed test, so I went back to the other and got this

This is the highest out of 5 tries, the lowest being 3meg +

      Whats that about?

well, if a line encounters an issue BT connections are throttled for 3 odd days until the fault is seen to have gone so perhaps something happened outside your control which knocked the line...

I can only hope. Not counting my chickens yet incase it goes back to how it was. Maybe as you said something outside of my knowledge has happened to sort things out. Still find that hard to believe though when I can't get things done when I ask for 'em!

It is confirmation that the problem wasn't my end though.

Probably enough to do the trick. Presumably you have everything filtered again now and your profile has updated correctly.

Ye, all back to normal. Speeds are still good (better than b4 infact) so maybe that did do the trick? Althought it never happened straight away but I think I remember you saying it could take a while to retrain? Anyway, whatever has happened has sorted it for now, just hope it stays that way.

Oh and thank you very much to everyone that helped. Appreciated. Just don't go anywhere incase I'm back tomorrow.

      Any ideas?
