      Another disconnection issue

Hi guys I am really sorry to post this problem again. Basically I think I am above average in sorting out computer issues but this beats me. I really cannot understand how to interpret router stats.
My problem is that I have been with sky broadband for 6 months. My connection keeps dropping intermittently. I was prepared to live with it but recently I have had some software from work installed on my laptop which really doesn't like disconnections as I kind of have to start from square one on whatever work I am doing. My connection speed is very good but the disconnections are annoying.I have tried everything simple.
      1. Removed the ring wire from all extensions.
      2. Installed filters on all phone and sky equipment
      3. Even tried a different router.
      4. Tested the sky router on the test socket with the faceplate removed. ( it was more stable then)

My router is a netgear white router dg834gt.I am on the sky mid package

My stats on the extension socket in my study are as follows

/usr/sbin/adslctl: ADSL driver and PHY status

This is most likely the problem and it would appear to be caused by your extension wiring as there are no errors at all when you use the test socket.

Although your reported noise margin is very healthy in both sets of stats, something must be wrong with the way that extension is wired.

When you say you removed the ring wire from all extensions, did you disconnect it at the master socket, as that is the important bit?

Otherwise, how is the cable routed - and is it good quality cable? It might be worth picking up a long enough plug in extension lead and running it separately from the test socket to your study and see how that fares.

Also look for any sources of electrical interference along the route of the existing extension wiring. I would be 99% certain the answer lies there as the rest of your stats look healthy.

      Re: Another disconnection issue

I saw some telephone extension kits in B&Q which used very flat cable - presumably to make it easier to hide the cable. That kind of cable is NOT suitable for ADSL however. It really needs to be "twisted pair" cable, where each coloured pair of wires (e.g., orange with a white stripe and white with an orange stripe) is twisted around together. That is less susceptible to interference.

Sorry, I assumed you were connecting to the router with network cable but should have asked if you are using wireless as this could also be a cause of the problem!

      ^^^^^^^
I think you were right the first time, wireless would not effect what the router is doing and the errors are very high.

      Re: Another disconnection issue

OK thanks for looking at my stats that reassures me that atleast there is no other problem. There is one issue that is if I plug the router into the socket with the face plate inserted I still get disconnection . Is it possible that there is a problem with my main socket faceplate ?

Now that you have reassured me that the stats are OK I shall try out with a long extension cable. Also try to take stats from the main BT socket with the faceplate inserted.

      Thanks again.

More likely with that extension wiring as it should all run from the faceplate. Have you disconnected the ring wire from terminal 3 of the faceplate?

Or, as you say, the faceplate itself could be faulty.

Masses of errors coming from somewhere so yes - either change the faceplate or, just to be sure, disconnect ALL the extension wiring from it first, replace it and then post again.

If the error rate improves with the extension wiring disconnected then the problem is definitely in the wiring rather than the faceplate itself.
