      trellis or no trellis???

      Hi,
I have posted earlier in the week about my problems with a noisy line and excessive noise margin but still have not got it sorted, after some searching on this site i have noticed that i have Trellis turned off.
Is this significant to my problem? anyone know or can help?

      my stats are below:

      Absolutely.

Trellis refers to trellis encoding of the data and should never be off. Something wrong there - without it data throughput will be affected and error correction too I believe (error tolerant modulation - decreases sensitivity to noise).

Call Sky and hopefully you'll get a CST who knows what the problem is.

in your opinion do you think this is causing the high noise margin of 13.0db?

a high noise margin is a good thing... i originally had TRELLIS disabled on my line, and after it got enabled by an engineer in just one of there many 'solutions' to my low speed, there was no noticeable difference... however i had a very low amount of errors to start with, so it may make a bigger difference on other lines

yes - if its not artificially inflated by a sky cap

Could be - don't know for sure but it would make some sense as the router may need to negotiate a higher noise margin to compensate.

Looking at your router reported max rate compared to your actual rate you don't look capped so I don't think that's the reason. To double check, does the router have that high noise margin immediately after booting (just want to exclude a wildly swinging noise margin)?

      Re: trellis or no trellis???

Trellis encoding is also used for the satellite signals, it doesn't improve signal to noise ratio. Its an error correction method. In using it though you have to send extra bits of data, which reduces your wanted data throughput. Good on a noisy link but wasted on a quiet link!
