      Speed Drop

      Hello Folks,

I have posted here once before and got some useful replies. however work commitments and poor broadband at home has not enabled me to return to bump that thread and i believe that old account has been deleted now.

I'm on Sky connect and went through a whole rigmarole of trying to get faster than 1.2Mbps speed out of my connection. That issue was finally ended with sky telling me via email that this is the maximum my BT line can handle. They eventually got back to me after my 14 day cancellation period (joy).

So i have had a slower than desired but stable connection up until the last few days when it appears to be shot to hell.

Sites are V slow loading and download speeds struggle to get over 11Kpbs. Playing games wavers up and down constantly.

Any advice will be gladly welcomed <3

      Re: Speed Drop

Your line has been capped (i.e., set to run at a lower speed) to 512kbit/sec, and even with this cap you're getting masses of errors. Your attenuation value - this is the measure of how much your phone line weakens the ADSL signal - is very high, but I still would have expected a higher speed than what you're getting.

The most likely problem is the telephone wiring in your house. Do you have any telephone extensions? Do these extensions plug into the main phone socket? Or are they wired directly into the main socket? Are you making sure that you have a microfilter on every phone connection, including the Sky TV receiver?

There's lots of helpful advice in the Cabling and faceplate help section that may improve things. Once you've improved things you should see the number of errors reduced (the CRC numbers in the detailed stats). Then it might be worthwhile trying to contact Sky and telling them that there was a problem with your telephone wiring that's been fixed now, and could they raise or remove the cap.

      Re: Speed Drop

If your main socket has a physical split going left to right on the faceplate just above the screws then you have a test socket, if you undo the 2 screws there will be a small socket on the bottom left corner, plug into that with a filter and see what happens.

      Re: Speed Drop

      Update!

I shut my only phone extension cable in a door - doh!

now i have just installed a wireless card and have just plugged the router into the master socket.

Im still vveeerrryyyy slow but i will give the connection a chance to settle down before i do anything else.

What should i say when i phone sky to ask about uncapping my line? Will it be ok to just say that to the first person i speak to?

      Re: Speed Drop

I did, when i plugged in the card i thought it would be prudent to reboot everything in the chain, as it were.

      Re: Speed Drop

you still have massive errors ?

do you hear crakling/hissing pops while on the phone ?

do you have a "test" socket ? (see first link in my sig)

its a bit like question time aint it
