      Angry Mcafee instalation

Hi all, my mcafee free trial is coming to an end, i have bought a new subscription and it is waiting to be installed after the 2nd of Feb. I assumed(quite wrongly) that the instalation would be done automatically by Mcafee but it seems this isn't the case and i have to install it myself. I e-mailed Mcafee and told them i was a bit of a "silver surfer" and not very confident with computers, they quite kindly replied with detailed instructions of how to go about the instalation, these instructions would be nothing to a young computer whizz kid but i find them quite daunting, and am losing sleep as to weather i'll be able to do it or not, any advice would be much appreciated!
P.S. why cant Mcafee do the install on line from thier end?

      Re: Mcafee instalation

Because they can't access your PC, remove the old installation, reboot it, install the new version and enter the necessary details to register it.
Installing and registering a new version is not difficult and quite often you can just break it down into sections, what instructions have you been sent? If you post them up (remove all personal info from them) we'll have a look and explain them for you.

I think if you had asked before you bought, most here would have told you to forget it. Security software is available free and is as good as, sometimes better than, paid for applications.

If you are already running McAfee, I would have thought all you needed to do was enter a new key code. If this is not the case,, I am sure someone who is running it, will tell you all you need to know.

AS far as I know you should be able to log into mcafee.com with your user details from sky and just update it there, will have a look later if I get time.

      Correct

I use Avast. Free, and very easy to install,
      and updates automatically.
Free antivirus - avast! 4 Home Edition Download
Just remember to delete McCrappy before you run the download.
You must not have 2 AV programs on one computer.

Many on this forum have reported problems with McCrappy and Sky.
Now that's ironic as Sky give it to you.

      Others suggest AVG, also free.

      Re: Mcafee instalation

Not just Sky giving it away, Mcafee is also touted by several banks as a freebie for their online customers. I know Natwest are giving 12 months subs too.

Doug. If you are happy with McCrappy. Used it without a problem for a year and paid for it already, follow the advice from PaulSky - see above.
At least you know there is a better free alternative if you fail.

I uninstalled Norton IS 2007 when my sub ended and replaced it with AVG - Free Edition I've seen a huge improvement in the performance of the PC. Norton slowed everything down dramatically.

      Re: Mcafee instalation

I was tempted to quote the entire email above,
but decided most people would think that unfunny.
      .

      What a McAfarce.

      That email is:
As long and boring as Pirates of the Caribbean 3.
As unfunny as Eddie Murphy in Norbit 1.
      As clear as Mud 2.
      As deadly as Saw 3.
Someone shoot the email McWriter. Please.

You can download Avast or AVG quicker than struggling
      through step 1.

      Re: Mcafee instalation

I will just quote part of it-
Please remove any other (third-party) Security software installed like Norton, Symantec, Live Update, Live Reg, PC Cillin, Trend Micro, Panda, Platinum, Secure IE, Zone Alarm, Black Ice or Freedom, Lava soft, Web root Spy Sweeper etc. from your Add/remove programs. So to install McAcrap you have to uninstall all your other security software? I don't think think so! I would rather drop it in the waste bucket. It is quite normal to stop other products running when installing AV, but uninstall? Who do they think they are, Bill Gates?

Is this advice given for the original install? If it is not, it may account for a lot of the problems being experienced by users.
