      Losing my connection - solved

Posted a week or so ago about losing my internet connection after a couple of hours of inactivity. I eventually came to the conclusion that it was a DNS problem. Have since changed my DNS settings in Network Connection properties to point to the OpenDNS servers rather than "auto" which presumably points to Sky's DNS servers and have suffered a lost connection for three days now.

Hope this helps anyone else with a similar problem.

Re: Losing my connection - solved

i went online on just 4 days ago and experienced several connection drops, so i tried this DNS hack, lost connections are fewer and far between now but i feel connection dropping may have something to do with duration of the connection since it usaully drops its connection after turning the router on within an hour or so afterwhich it maintains the connection only dropping it occasionally.

this shouldnt be happening at all never had these issues with telewest, wanadoo or orange which were dial ups using USB modems rather than 'always on' like sky.

i also noticed that my connection speed is 8mbps when in auto DNS but only 7mbps when using the DNS hack, however it may be to do with logging on at a busier time rather than loss of speed due to openDNS.

Re: Losing my connection - solved

i have reverted back to using Sky servers since they are noticeably faster now. Opendns has been sluggish of late, at first i thought firefox needed a refresh but when i switched back to the Sky servers my DNS problems were solved, although the router occasionally drops the connection at least my searches are bieng completed and pages loading much faster than Opendns.

Could be a sleep type setting on network card or wireless card.

      whats a sleep type setting?

used a firefox hack when i started to experience hangs with Sky servers and went back to using OpenDNS, no more hangs perhaps it was firefox issue afterall.....
