Several broadband issues, any advice would be great.

      Hi all,

Hope you can help. My sky broadband was activated yesterday and if I thought I had aggro getting it activated its been nothing but frustrating now I have it.

I seem to have several issues.

      1. Download speed flutuates wildly, I am on the Max pack but can only get a max speed of 4mb here (need the volume). When I first connected last night I got 1048kb Downstream, I was not best pleased and rebooted. It then synched at 768kb, rebooted again and got 3010kb, again and 2780kb and so on and so on. Yesterday evening it synched at 4400kb.

      Current stats are
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 1162 1261 0 0 0 0:05:35
      LAN 15 0 0 0 0 0:06:32
      WLAN 1750 1514 0 0 0 0:06:11
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2848 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 45.0 db 25.0 db
Noise Margin 8.4 db 14.0 db

The upstream has remained constant at 768kb. I have tested on all lines and removed the face plate to get to the test socket and the speeds fluctuate as much, it makes no difference. Spoke to BT who tested the line and assure me its fine, although I don't agree.

      2. The Sagem router seems to drop all the time. The main issues seems to be when the phone is used. Again I have tried 5 filters in all combinations including just using it on the master socket with the cover off. I am certain I can here the router synching. I have tried a mixture of filter from the crappy ones they supply to my filters I got from adslnation. It drops out when the sky box calls out as well and has to re-synch.

Please help. I am pulling my hair out and the support lines talk to you like you are an idiot.

      Thanks in advance.

If you still hit the issues when in the test socket with only a filter and telephone plugged in then you need to call Sky as there is a problem. You need to plug in there for a little while and post your stats again so we can see what is going on a bit better.

I don't think there is much doubt that your line has problems. Are you in one of the flooded or very wet areas?

You could try a quiet line test, to do this -
Plug a normal touch tone phone directly into the BT test socket

Dial 17070, press option 2 (quiet line test)

You should hear 'Quiet Line Test' and then silence, there should be no pops, clicks, whistles, buzzing etc. If you hear noise on the line, dial BT and report the fault, they should be able to sort it out.

Re: Several broadband issues, any advice would be great.

Thanks I also think it must be the line. I just resynched again and it just keeps dropping, however the upstream is untouched.

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1152 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 45.0 db 26.0 db
Noise Margin 5.6 db 13.0 db

I have now done the quiet line test and could hear clicks, crackles and buzzing, and that was with the router off. With it on I can definately hear the router connecting.

Restarted the router after the test and the stats are now

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2048 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 45.0 db 25.0 db
Noise Margin 8.1 db 14.0 db

Re: Several broadband issues, any advice would be great.

Leaving it on the test socket made no difference. Speed still up and down and could still hear on the line.

Moved to another socket now with a different filter. Same noise on the phone and stats are now.

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2752 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 45.0 db 25.0 db
Noise Margin 8.9 db 14.0 db

Placed a call with BT and an engineer is due tomorrow. Fingers crossed they can sort this. Took 6 weeks to get this active and now I have it I can't really use it properly.

Thanks for the help guys, engineer came today and could find nothing in the house. BUt he was a great guy and called for a hoist unit. When they got up to check the pole they saw my cable had been struck by lightening. Replaced the cable between the pole and my house and I can no longer hear the modem and I am connecting with an upstream of between 4900 and 5100.

I was lucky to get such a great engineer.

Re: Several broadband issues, any advice would be great.

Line issues are a pain as only BT can deal with them and getting that to happen can be problematic. Thankfully you sound like you got one of the high-skill engineers that can test anything from the master socket back to exchange and he was willing to keep looking instead of just fobbing you off.
What stats are you getting now?
