Internet speed been slow past few days.

Well i've been reading around a few stickes and havnt really figured out what to do. My internet speed should beable to go upto 3mb (just checked sky's main site) but i have only ever recived 1.5mb (doesnt really bother me) But the past week or so the speed on my internet has suddenly droped to 700kps!!

When playing pc games (mainly css) my ping has been bad and watching videos on youtube i have now found that the time it takes for me to watch it is quicker than it is to download it... basicly i have to stop every video after 2mins and wait 2mins just to watch the rest.

I'm a total noob when it comes to internet settings so anything pointing me towards the right direction would be great!

      - thanks, Snail

First things first. Can you post your stats(link below) and how are you connected? Are you trying to connect wirelessly?

could you post your detailed router stats (see second link in my sig and look for the mognuts utility)

your line looks capped, have you spoken to sky about your problems in the last few days ?

Re: Internet speed been slow past few days.

60db attenuation is over 4km line length to the exchange so you are right in thinking that ~3 Mbps should be possible on a noise free line.

It looks like Sky have capped you at just under 1 Mbps, presumably because of errors on the line so the first thing you need to do is check your wiring. See the cabling and faceplate forum for help here.

If you have an NTE5 master socket, then try the router in the engineer test socket behind the faceplate. If the noise margin increases (i.e. less line noise)then you have to look at your extension wiring for the cause of the problem.

Re: Internet speed been slow past few days.

Well i dont want to mess around with wires and break somthing because i'll get in trouble. I noticed that the router was plugged into a telephone line upstairs, maybe this is causeing the problem.

Last time i spoke to sky was a few months ago and the service was crap. (my mum cancled a skybox order that she made for me. I felt bad about her spending 300 so i asked here to cancle) anyways I was on hold for 30mins+ and then after that they gave me a ticket. 4days later they phoned and said "we cancled your sky broadband by mistake... it will take 2 more weeks to get you connected again" ended up being 4weeks+ due to being busy at x-mas.

Re: Internet speed been slow past few days.

^^^ Your router stats appear to show that your line has been heavily capped down from 2528 kbps max to 928 kbps downstream and from 416 kbps max down to 320 kbps upstream.

In short, you have a noisy line, most likely due to internal wiring issues. See the cabling and faceplate forum for help, in particular regarding removal of the "ring" wire from terminal 3 of the master socket. Once the cause of the noise is eliminated you can think about asking Sky to lift the cap.

Ok i'll research on how to remove the ring wire and see if that makes any diffrence.
