      Sudden disconnections problems

      Hi

For the last 10 months my connection has been working like a dream apart from a couple of diconnection periods due to exchange work being carried out. But over the last week my connection now cuts (i light on router goes off) whenever I make a call or receive one. I have a filtered mastersocket then run a cat5 cable to my pc in my room.

My usual connection would be 13000kbps and 768kbps, but now I can barely get over 10000kbps and 200kbps. Line attn has increased from 35 to 37db, my noise margin is around 5/6 whereas before it would be 9/10db mark.

Are BT doing work at the exchange? Sumtimes when it does reconnect i can't browse for ten minute periods because of no dns servers being show in the router status page.

Like i said never had this problem before, anyone have any ideas?
      cheers

      Re: Sudden disconnections problems

If you are using a filtered main socket then normally you have a test socket behind it, can you remove the faceplate and plug a filter into the test socket and then plug the router into that?

      Re: Sudden disconnections problems

It could be your faceplate that is faulty, but it is more likely that BT have done some work on your line, maybe re-routed it slightly, which is effecting your attenuation/SNR. Try Paul's suggestion to rule out the faceplate.

      Re: Sudden disconnections problems

I have just tried plugging the router via a filter into the mastersocket, made and received a call....no disconnections!! faulty faceplate? only had it for 9 months or so.

What are your stats like from the test socket, are you syncing higher again with a better margin?

      Re: Sudden disconnections problems

scrap what i said. Tried it again and it now also disconnects when plugged into master socket when making a call. Synching was pretty much the same with the margin being at 2.0db.
Should I call Sky or BT to know if some work is being done at my exchange thats effecting my connection? This seems to be the cause of the problem.

I am using the following dns servers:

      208.67.222.222
      208.67.220.220

      Re: Sudden disconnections problems

It looks like it is definitely your line that is at fault. Try a quiet line test. Plug a normal touch tone phone directly into the BT test socket

Dial 17070, press option 2 (quiet line test)

You should hear 'Quiet Line Test' and then silence, there should be no pops, clicks, whistles, buzzing etc. If you hear noise on the line, dial BT and report the fault as a noise on the line, they should be able to sort it out. Don't mention Broadband or they will do nothing.

      Re: Sudden disconnections problems

Looks like everything is back to normal. The telephone line went dead for around an hour lastnight about midnight. Checking the stats this morning the connection stats are back to normal without any disconnection problems.

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 13499 kbps 764 kbps
Line Attenuation 35.0 db 19.9 db
Noise Margin 9.3 db 12.5 db

So if a mod could close this..thanks.
