      Sky reduced my ADSL speed.

      hi folks.

recently i have had ADSL problems.
in the last two weeks i have had intermittent connection problems to Sky Broadband. At first, i thought i'd check with Sky to make sure there wasn't a problem with their end. They said perhaps they were sending too much information down the line, so they said they would try reducing it "a little".
it has since dropped to 0.5 megabits, which is just not good enough.

BT came out this morning to change our external cabling, as it turned out that was pretty much on it's last legs too. it was causing lots of noise on the line previously which is probably the main reason our ADSL connection was so unstable in the first place.

i have attached a screenshot of my router stats....can anyone tell by looking at it if our speed has been "capped" by Sky? And can i ask to get it put back now the telephone line has been fixed?

      thanks....

Yes you've been very heavily capped. Normally, a router will try to negotiate the fastest speed it can that gives a downstream noise margin figure of about 6.9dB. If the noise margin is significantly larger than 6.9dB, then the speed has been capped. This cap maybe the usual maximum speed of the service that you've subscribed to (2Mbit/sec for Base, 8Mbit/sec for Mid and 16Mbit/sec for Max), or it may be an "artificial" cap imposed by Sky to improve stability.

There have been people who've managed to get their connection uncapped after a line has been fixed. Have a search on the forum for "uncapped" or something like that.

Call Sky Technical support, explain that you have had your line fixed by BT but are getting slow download speeds due to being capped, ask to be troubleshot for slow speed so that you can be escalated to CST, if this is done CST will look at your line stats and decide what to do with the capping.

Re: Sky reduced my ADSL speed.

      so wierd.

no sooner did i receive your very helpful replies, a Sky Technician phoned me at home to find out how my original query was going!!
      SPOOKY!!!

anyway, he believes that BT capped ADSL down to 0.5 mega-bits while the fault was being rectified over the last week. he was very helpful, and informs me that he is personally going to see it thru that that cap is lifted and the 8 mega-bit service is resumed.

who says customer service was dead?

thanks to you guys for advice.
i'll post again to let you know the final outcome.

Must have been an open ticket that was set to have a EU call back done on it. At least it's going to be sorted without you having to keep ringing up.

Re: Sky reduced my ADSL speed.

.....here are the stats now BT have closed the fault enquiry, an guy at Sky has asked for the cap to be lifted:

i'm sure this is looking more like it should do already.
and it's only been a couple of hours.
my actual browsing speed still isn't much faster right now, but i'm sure as the line and router "train" themselves again it will get faster, right?

      thanks for looking in.

Re: Sky reduced my ADSL speed.

Sky man just called back....we are indeed on the "connect" package until the exchange get new equipment or something.

still syncing at 8096kbps download, so i guess we've got stability back

now just waiting for a few days or so to see if the actual browsing speeds get back to normal.
