      VPN works ok with Sagem router

      Hi all,

      First post here - have been using this forum a lot to read about the new sagem router. I switched to Sky Broadband last week and was concerned about the number of people having problems with VPN. True enough, I also could not get VPN to work one I setup my Sagem router.

      I use Check Point - SecureClient (IPSec) with a certificate provided by work, to access the office.

      I mentioned my problem to some people at work and they provided me with a list of 'trusted IP addresses' I should setup in my firewall rules on the router. The default on my sagem was to allow all outbound and deny all inbound traffic. I added new rules to the inbound traffic to allow traffic from the IP address of my company's firewall and now it all works fine.

      Hope this information is of some use to some of you.

      Now that's unexpected. My understanding of IPSec suggests that port forwarding isn't going to make it work if the router doesn't support VPN passthrough, or the VPN doesn't support NAT traversal.

      Without giving the IP addresses in question, can you say which ports you've allowed?

      Hi, Check Point VPN-1 SecureClient DOES support NAT Traversal.

      I am not sure what you mean by 'which ports you've allowed'!!

      I simply went to 'security' tab on router, then to the 'firewall rules' and clicked 'add' for the inbound traffic. I then simply entered the IP address of the firewall and clicked 'apply'.

      Re: VPN works ok with Sagem router

      Unfortunately, I've broken my Sagem router so I can't see exactly what it says on that page, but the Netgear V2 router, I've got a page that looks like this:

      What did you have the "Service" option set to? Did you keep it at "Any(ALL)"? And what did you put in the address fields (the "Send to LAN Server", "Start" and "Finish" entry boxes)?

      EDIT: Oh, and don't worry, when I said that that was unexpected, I wasn't suggesting that I didn't believe you, just that I was surprised that you'd managed to get it working.

      Re: VPN works ok with Sagem router

      The rules page on the Sagem looks pretty much the same.

      I have;

      Service = Any(all)
      Action=Allow
      LAN Server = IP Address of firewall
      WAN users = Any (did not fill start-finish IP Addresses)

      One more point I forgot to mention (sorry), I did reduce the MTU size within the router to 1400.

      Now I'm even more baffled! The LAN Server address on that page is supposed to be a local address, e.g., 192.168.0.2, so putting in the address of your company's gateway is totally illogical. I can't even begin to understand how that works.

      Now it's going to be very interesting to see if this hack - and I think that's the right word - works with the Nortel VPN client.

      Re: VPN works ok with Sagem router

      I too thought LAN server was supposed to be a local address. Perhaps this is where I was going wrong. Will have a go later using Nortel...

      UPDATE: Tried this and still no luck Yet to try the MTU to 1400 thing... What is this?
