      Connection drops in the Afternoon/Evening

      Hi guys/girls,

I seem to be having problems with my connection which keeps dropping in the late afternoon/evening(4-12pm).I am using a extension which i have to use because my Master box is in the hallway between the front door and stair case which means there is no room to have a computer so i have the computer in a upstairs room. The extension was wired into the master socket by a bt engineer.I have the new style Black router and i looked at my stats which show my noise margin is under 6db and sometimes has low has 0db.I have tested it on the mastersocket and the speed does go up from 3798 to 5100 but the noise margin is still low(again under 6db and sometimes 0db).I have spoken to sky and he did somethings to the router over the phone and he told me that the line the errors have improved but it still drops.I don't know what i can do about the extension because i got to have the computer upstairs and i don't want to go wireless because i go live with my xbox.Any help is very appreciated.
      Thanks Richard

have a look at the cabling and faceplate forum, you are looking at the part about the "ring wire" which once removed may help your line.
as you will have seen from lots of other posts extentions of any kind can play havoc with the speed

once you have had a look post back with your thoughts

Plug the router in to the master socket and either go wireless or run a long ethernet cable, you can run up to 100m of ethernet without seeing issues with the connection.

could you post your router stats from how you have it set up now (with the extention) and then do one from the test socket (i assume using wireless as its so far away)
if you log into the router and look for the show statistics, then copy and paste

As above the ring wire can cause problems, BT still tend to connect it when installing extensions but it isn't required. I think its connected to pin 3 and its orange and white disconnect it at both ends in the master and extension sockets. It's the easiest thing to try first.

i will try it without using the extension but my computer isn't wireless ambled so i'll have to buy a usb adapter and see what happens but i'm still please with the results by doing something simple by disconnecting the orange wire

The fact that your speed has jumped up means you have got rid of some problems by disconnecting the ring wire. I wouldn't worry abut the noise margin too much I believe the new grey router will handle that better than the old one. Just run for a while and see if it has cured your disconection problems before you do anything else.
