      Netgear Stats via Ethernet:

      Speed Down 1362.13 Kbps ( 1.3 Mbps )
      Speed Up 343.92 Kbps ( 0.3 Mbps )

      Netgear connection stats in router:

      Modem
      ADSL Firmware Version A2pB018e.d16f
      Modem Status Connected
      DownStream Connection Speed 8096 kbps
      UpStream Connection Speed 416 kbps
      VPI 0
      VCI 38

Have not tried Airport (Wireless) but I imagine it'd be the same after prior Wireless and Non wireless tests are coming out almost the same. Checked the Sky emails and no FUP emails so I assume that I've not been FUP'd (even though I haven't downloaded the 40MB criteria anyway.) I guess I'd better phone up Sky and report the problem. I'm hoping something is wrong temporarily at the exchange.

No, I've not done that but I'd rather fix the problem with their speed dropping than use that if you know what I mean? Don't understand why it was at 6.5MB then drops to 1.3MB (both without the DNS).

Re: Help pls - Speeds dropping and fast :(

Phoned Sky tech support they saying that my speed is OK after looking what the speed states on the router page (where it says 8096 downstream etc) so first guy told me to plug in test socket and call back, did that. Second guy saying he shouldn't of said that because I'm getting my 8MB speed and need to call back when its NOT plugged into the test socket now. I can't be bothered. I asked what difference it makes since its the same. He said after that they go down a route where they see whats making my pages open slow... i.e. viruses, spyware etc. I regularly check those anyway and don't have any. I'm really uptight about that type of thing so I really don't want to phone back if thats the crap they're going to feed me on the slow download speeds actually on the net and the speedtester.

He also said and I quote "You're using those internet speed testers aren't you?" I said yes and he then replied.. "they're wrong anyway."

I took up on Sky's line rental too, it's not been transferred over to sky yet (28th Jan start date) but maybe coincidence?

they're not great but should give a decent indication of speed...try the link on my sig and download the large file, if transfer rate is around 800KB/sec then its the speed test servers but it doesn't look to be an issue at sky's end tbh...

OK this is weird. Speed test again using the one that's in some of your signatures and got this...

(haven't been on that site in ages so no caches cookies/history etc)

Yet, when I go to ThinkBroadband's speedtester I get this...

      Speed Down 1471.15 Kbps ( 1.4 Mbps )
      Speed Up 345.10 Kbps ( 0.3 Mbps )

*shrug* can someone else go to ThinkBroadband's speedtester and tell me if they are having similar experiance? Thanks.

the one in my sig is the BT tester (the one in red writing), an http download not a java based one - what speed do you get with that? it would suggest that the servers you're running tests from are being used heavily though...

LOL. I was doing that when you posted

I just went to your BT one also and downloaded the medium in 7 seconds and large in about 15. I was counting lol. Looks like Think Broadbands speedtester has gone wrong and I am getting my speeds. I'm still Ethernet connected at the moment though so we'll see in a mo when I go wireless. Fingers crossed. Thanks for helping :-)

[Edit] We crossed posted again LOL

indeed we did!! does look like a dodgy tester tbh - dont put too much faith in them, i prefer to gauage speeds on http downloads...

You have discovered your problem - you don't have one!

      Thinkbroadband must have issues!

      Speedtest is OK!!

EDIT: Must learn to type faster!!

Yeah, must be. Well you know I feel silly now lol. I did trust TB speedtester. It has been OK for me but nevermind now, I'll stuff that one and tell anyone about it that it's a bunch o' cr*p! Thanks ever so much for sticking with me during this.

Ah, your results just show it too. Thanks for testing both and linking. My phantom problem is solved!!

      ---

..and to prove it. I'm back wireless on my ole faithful Linksys and getting this speed...

      (a bare loss in wireless)

Although, I do have to ask. Sky kept saying I was getting a full 8 meg as it states so in router page so when I'm connected via Ethernet to router, why don't I get that on the speed tests? Is it something that's just off in the speed tests or you always loose a little anyway? I don't mind as long as I'm getting over 5meg obviously thanks again everyone.

Re: Help pls - Speeds dropping and fast :(

you'll never get the full sync speed cause of packet overheads, so what you're getting is bang on...

the BT on in my sig should give you a transfer rate (at the bottom of the window) of around 800KB/sec...if so, all is good
