Slow speeds for a Max connection...

Hi There, happy new year to all,

I've got the Max connection and i have got 2 pc's connected to the router via ethernet, I also have 2 laptops connected via wireless. I am 400m away from the telephone exchange but still my connection is really very slow!!

When downloading a file (i.e. a pdf) my download speed will not go higher than 90Kb/s.

      I've just done a speed test on-line :

isn't this slow for a MAX connection?

but on my 'settings' page for the router it says the downstream is 11263 kbps

      here are my stats:

/usr/sbin/adslctl: ADSL driver and PHY status
Status: Showtime Channel: FAST, Upstream rate = 574 Kbps, Downstream rate = 11263 Kbps

Re: Slow speeds for a Max connection...

Your stats are fine - actually a slightly low sync for your attenuation but that's not the issue here.

I'm guessing that speedtest was done wireless? If so then that's likely to be the problem. Try wired.

If it's not that then in order of likelihood:
      • the speedtest server is overloaded - try Skyuser's
      • your TCP/IP settings are incorrect - run TCPOptimizer
      • something else on your system is using the bandwidth - e.g. Sky Anytime, Malware etc
      • someone else is using your bandwidth - e.g. another LAN user, wireless hacker

Cool Re: Slow speeds for a Max connection...

can I just point out that although you say you live only 400mtrs from the exchange, this does not mean that your line only runs that distance! It is very rare that a line runs 'as the crow flies', your line could actually run for several miles, depending on the routing.
      Try this site for speedtests.
