      intermittent connections

for the past couple of weeks my internet connection has been playing up, as in ie cant connect as there is no connection (according to ie or mozilla for that matter) however if i reboot the router (v1) it works ok for a bit, now apon ringing sky and complaining about slow speeds and the like they rang to say it was sorted, but every now and then its disconnected, the man on the phone told me that my problem was down to the fact that the phone extensions (1 of) in my house are hard wired into the master and thats why the broadband isnt working properly, although its been trouble free for 7 months, this i just dont believe as how else are extensions supposed to be wired and in any case ive disconnected everything but the router and still get slow speeds and disconected
here are some of my stats i dunno how to do the full version like other people do as im not too good with puters
      ADSL Firmware Version A2pB018e.d16f
      Modem Status Connected
      DownStream Connection Speed 2048 kbps
      UpStream Connection Speed 384 kbps
      VPI 0
      VCI 38
      System Up Time 51:15:01
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 371904 463634 0 476 2205 51:14:02
      LAN 10M/100M 427266 378151 0 2228 523 51:15:00
      WLAN 11M/54M/108M 3123 0 0 5 0 51:14:51

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2048 kbps 384 kbps
Line Attenuation 15.5 db 29.5 db
Noise Margin 15.1 db 13.0 db

dunno if thats any help but even when the router says im connected at 2048 when i do a speed test sometimes im lucky to get 700 ive even had 1300 but not too often so if anyone could point me in the right direction, and in terms that a 10 year old would understand i would be happy as larry

      Re: intermittent connections

Hardwired extensions are ok IF they are wired properly, does your main telephone socket have a physical split line just above the screws going left to right across the plate?

      Re: intermittent connections

no it does not, it is an old master socket (17 years) wired from an even older box (gpo) that the old telephones used to be hard wired into, the wires are connected to 2&5 along with the extension wires which is a slave and doesnt have 3 connected as i dont need it to ring

      Re: intermittent connections

with your SNR, you should not be getting errors. this points to your extentions being the problem. telephone extentions do degrade (for wont of a better phrase)
the best thing to test this is by using the test socket (see first link in my sig)
i would suggest if you do have a test socket you try this first as it will rule out any internal pronlems with you wiring (there is a very, very small chance the problem is not in your wiring, but from reading other posts on the forum i would be supprised)

      Re: intermittent connections

^^thats a pain, you could have a look at the cabling and faceplate forum. if you feel upto it, you could have a look in all the boxes and remove all wires except 2&5 as these may be causing interference (acting like an arial)

please have a look at the above thread first (so you are happy with what to do, remember if you mess things up BT will charge a fortune to come and fix)

Edit: just seen the bit about the sky boxes, if that has fixed the problem do not bother with the above

      Re: intermittent connections

How long have you been on Sky? The boxes may need to be on the line if it's less than 12 months.
