      Re: Different Router ?

Well that's unexpected. If the second router (the one that isn't plugged into the phone line) is acting as a DHCP server, it'll hand out an IP address and netmask, as well as either one or two DNS server addresses and a default gateway address. Ordinarily, a broadband router/modem would give out its own address as the default gateway address.

I guess there's two possibilities for why this worked for you. One is that the second router has managed to identify the first router as the default gateway by using a routing protocol (such as RIP), or you were setting the default gateway address on the PCs manually.

I suppose I'd have to say that although it worked for you, it most likely wouldn't normally work, so it's better to have the first router (the one connected to the phone line) acting as a DHCP server, and have the DHCP server on the second router disabled. That way, you're not relying on the second router having to do something clever to find the address of the other router.

      Yep,

I agree with you there. As with most things within the cyber arena, what works for one person may not necessarily work for the next.
I have to admit though that the D-Link router does have dynamic routing (Rip V1 & V2) but its not a setting I have ever played with.

The only system I ever hard coded with an IP and gateway was my server, whilst the rest remained on dynamic IP's.

But yes I agree with you the preferred method is to have the router first in line to act as the DHCP server and then give the second a static IP (that way if you have problems you know where to go lol).
