      Noob needs help !

Hi, im hoping to migrate to SKYBB, hopefully the Max option.

At the moment I'm with toucant on their 8 meg package but only getting around 2.2 meg and fluctuates daily. My main problem with them is my ping goes crazy very often I get pings of around 200+ with any IP.

I would like to know what speed I could expect on sky and whether or not I would get any of this ping problem annoyance with Sky. i.e. is it the line or the ISP?

      Current stats:
      DownStream Connection Speed 2688 kbps
      UpStream Connection Speed 448 kbps
(which im happy with if it was stable)

Line Attenuation 58 db 15.5 db
Noise Margin 8 db 20 db

My exchange is : Poplar, London

I might have posted the right tech info, maybe not :P but can you please reply in noob for me, thanks

speed wise, about the same - ping wise prob the same (its normally down to line - as you're on ADSLMax it settles down after 10 days and BT use Fast. Sky don't so a lot of config might be needed once you're active)...

with your attenuation (distance from the exchange) you would only be able to get around 3.5meg (ish)
if you are plugging your router into a telephone extention this may be one of the reasons for the lower conection at the moment (but you are also on Connect which is a rebranded BT connnection and your profile may be set to the speeds you get)

the max package on sky would not give you any more than about 3.5meg (with perfect line conditions)

have a look at the links in my sig, which will give you a better understanding of your stats and also about your home wiring

unless you need the upload speed (764 i think) and unlimited download (around 250gig a month) you may be better on the mid package at 5 (unless there is no space on the exchange and you may then be offered the connect package at 17 and is the same as you are on now)

not sure how much you pay now ? but you would be on the same thing with sky
as a thought it may be worth waiting and just keep checking (when they are due to upgrade there exchange, you may be offered the connect package at 5, they tend to do this when they are about 6 months from getting upgrade in exchange)
of course being in london when/if they upgrade the exchange equipment there may be alot of people on there connect package who would then benifit from the reduced costs (10 max / 5 mid)

mid is sky's bit in the exchange (i think, not sure if equipment is inferior, i know the V1 router firmware is inferior at the mo, but you would get one of the new Sagem or netgear ones anyway)
if it were me i would take the 5 sky one (but not sure how much you pay at the mo, and i always was a bit tight )

      Re: Noob needs help !

I pay around 13 for my BB atm and 8 line rental for each line (2 lines)
so it wud be cheaper but i'm just bothered about this ping malarky, i play online games and my ping has been around 150-200 since yesterday and has happened intermittently like that since I regraded from their (toucan) 1 meg package to their 8 meg package, so I'm not sure whether this would continue under Sky or not.

cannot say for sure on the Pings
you could have a look at the cabling and faceplate forum as sometimes yuor home wiring can add problems)
