      the bt checker shows my number as 256 max speed. i had 512 from pipex since 2002 and was put on 1meg after a mistake by bt which worked fine. i was refused 2meg by pipex and bt then went to sky, the guy on the phone at sky tryed to get me to take the base package due to the bt results. i went for the mid and have a steady 4.3meg connection which has been fine for over 12 months now with 51db attenuation..

      Re: Sky says my line will get 512Kbps max, ordered Base anyway

      Well, I finally have some results to report. My line is now active - although I still don't have my Sky router yet, that is another story - and I have checked my stats with an old Speedtouch ADSL router I had been using as a network switch.

      Despite what Sky, BT and every other Tom, **** or Harry said about my line only supporting 512k, my Speedtouch router reports the following stats;

      Attenuation : Up 11.0dB / Down 17dB
      Noise margin: Up 14.0dB / Down 31.0dB
      Sync : Up 384 / Down 2048

      So, having been cautious and only ordered BASE package - because I was advised I could only get 512k - I am now thinking I want to change to MID, or even MAX, package.

      If I call Sky and ask them to move me up to MID or MAX, will they want to charge me again?

      Your line should be able to get the maximum speed (15323 kbit/sec) on Sky Broadband Max, and quite comfortably too. As far as I know, upgrading is free of charge.

      I got a new line in mid December and it still says I can receive 1Mb max, however I am 350m away from the exchange. I have ordered Mid, cause there is no way this check is correct. Activation date is on Wednesday so fingers crossed it works. Got the router and everything already, so I will just have to star at the black box hoping for broadband soon

      where you basing that from? the upload att is 14, downstream is 31 so id go for Mid and play it safe...baring in mind all speed estimates are exactly that and shouldn't be taken as gospel

      This what I get for your Down Attenuation of 17

      ADSL2+ Speed Test

      We estimate your line is capable of between 16mb to 24mb broadband on an ADSL2+ service

      Did you use the up to 8 checker?
