Utterly Frustrated - Serious help required.

      Hi All,

I seem to have a common problem, from what I can gather reading a lot of the other posts. But, for some reason, I cant seem to get the correct solution. Any help would be very much appreciated, as I am going to explode with frustration. (I called Sky helpline once, holy ****, it was like talking to a 6 year old, so I hung up.

I have the Sky Max package, and my Router is connected in a bedroom upstairs from the main socket connection. I only live 2.1km's from the exchange. When I first got it installed, I was getting roughly between 3 and 4 mbs download speed. Now I am lucky to get just over 1mb. However, the most frustrating thing is the constant line drops. Like every 10 minutes.

If anybody can point me in the right direction, it will be very, very much appreciated. (I cant even email pictures of my kid to his grandparents because it timeouts when the line drops!!!)

      Here is my stats...

firstly, you're capped to 1Mbps...have you called Sky before regarding this?...

secondly, the extention probably isn't helping...

Your telephone line length to the exchange appears to be nearly 4km so it must go around the houses a bit!

Although Sky have reduced your speed from a potential 4+ to around 1 mbps you are still getting errors so there must be some noise on the line.

How many telephone extension sockets do you have, and what is plugged into them? Can you try the router in the master socket, or better still the test socket if you have this type of master socket, then post stats again?

If it works better in the test socket then you need to look at the extension cabling to get rid of the noise.

ADSL2 not ADSL2+ - that should be at least as reliable as G.DMT, so I don't think that's the issue here.

Re: Utterly Frustrated - Serious help required.

well seeing as its not what Sky even offers thats more than likely adding to the issue...

Sky use gdmt or ADSL2+ so line is more than likely misconfigured...

Re: Utterly Frustrated - Serious help required.

      Hi Guys,

Thanks for the advice. I think the best thing to do is to try the master socket, although that might be difficult as I use an ethernet cable and its an old desktop PC, so I will have to lump it all downstairs.

Strange about the line length though, I used the DSL ZoneUK and it still says 2.1km.

Not too sure what the ADSL2+ thing is, but I will check the forums for additional info.

Why would SKy cap me at 1mbs?

I will let you know about the master socket.

Thanks for taking the time to help!

      Cheers

Re: Utterly Frustrated - Serious help required.

all line length checkers are straight line, not total line length - hence the attenuation being a better indication of line length (or quality anyway, seen some lines less than 1KM total length with att. level of 63!!!)

      Cheers Iamnottheenemy

I plugged my connection into the master socket and this is my new stats. Is there any difference from the previous stats. I got a funny feeling I will need to speak to Sky on this one!

Re: Utterly Frustrated - Serious help required.

line seems to have cleared up and the SNR has gone up so you're definately capped so give Sky a buzz (in about an hour id say) and see if you can get to CST (a tier 3 agent preferably) and they'll sort it out for you...
