Help, router not connecting to 192.168.0.1 and no net connection

Right, a friend got sky broadband using MAC code from old net provider. I set up their PC for Sky BB a week or so ago. All went well for a couple of days, then suddently no net access.

I can't even get on the router home page 192.168.0.1 to try and diagnose any issues. I have tried connecting both wireless and via LAN connection but still the same thing. I get the 'connected' icon at the bottom right of the XP screen , the 'sent' bytes goes up, but the 'received' bytes is usually less than 100.

I then tried the Netgear router on my own home Sky BB connection. No problems at all, and I can connect to the router home page as well.

I am at a wits end now. At first I thought the PC LAN card (Dell) was faulty, so I added a wireless card, but still get the same symptoms as above. How can I check if the line might be faulty? Tomorrow I might try reinstalling XP from scratch as it could be a lot of spyware which might be causing issues. But apart from that I really don't know what else to try?

It could well be a Firewall problem. The Firewall in XP will allow you to send without any attempts to block but it can block incoming. The same probably applies to the Firewall in the Router (but as it works on your set up it isn't this). I would try disabling the XP Firewall and try again. If it works then you know where the problem lies (the same also applies if a 3rd party Firewall is used, try disabling or allowing all traffic).

Sounds a lot like the Network Adaptor or Adaptor settings to me.

If there was a problem with the phone line you would still be able to access the router settings page (192.168.0.1) as long as the network cable was connected correctly from the router to your network adaptor.

You never know the new adaptor you put in could be faulty or maybe something to do with the drivers.

Try disabling any OTHER network adaptor in the system.

have you tried pinging the router from a command prompt? what ip have you got on the adaptor? i had a mate with the same problem and it was the firewall in the sky software blocking traffic but pinging was fine

Connect the router and disable and then enable your network card, that should allow the PC to pick up a new IP address from the router.

tried that already. still can't connect.

I will try disabling the firewall and see if that works. Failing that i think the next
option is to reinstall XP from scratch.

AS I said it worked fine just over a week ago . Im not sure what has changed but the last resort is to install XP from scratch.

Re: Help, router not connecting to 192.168.0.1 and no net connection

You don't actually say if you have set your network
adaptor to obtain a IP address automatically (DHCP)?
      if not do so

also if you go in command prompt and do a ipconfig command
have you got a valid ip address ie 192.168.0.x etc
if you cant obtain a ip address and are getting a 169 address
or nothing at all, then you have probably got a corrupt
      TCP/IP stack

if so type "netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt" into command line and press
enter, reboot pc and keep your fingers crossed

Perhaps an obvious one here and one that may have been mentioned already, but have you tried resetting the router to factory settings?

I would certainly favour this over re-installing XP as a first move. Easier to sort out and takes less time

Don't supose you have another Laptop / PC you could try connecting to it? This would confirm if its a router / PC problem....

Otherwise try releaseing / renewing your IP address and confirm its being assigned one within range of the DHCP Scope from the router...
