      Default DMZ Server

      Hey all,

I've had Sky BB for about 4 months now, and it's going OK (ish!)

Just a quick question...what the hell is a DMZ Server, and in what scenario would this be used?

I do work in IT Support, but this is one thing i have not come accross! I have also looked around Wikipedia (and other similar sites), but i just want to know to what context it is used in scenarios directly involving Sky.

Thanks in advance, and I hope you all enjoyed your X-Mas!

      De-Militarized-Zone

The router firewall is effectively disabled putting any IP into this area.
Useful for testing (as I am finding out)...

It effectively bypasses all router security to tthe given internal IP.

Thats why I'm puzzled with my issue -
laptop works fine when in the DMZ, but it doesn't if its not...

I understand the meaning of Internal IP, but what does having DMZ server mean? What is acomplished by having one??

Thank you for the quick reply, Gordon!

      Re: Default DMZ Server

It gets around all router security and traffic issues... like opening all your ports on the router... but this allows you to do it with one wee tick of a box.

I dunno if it has a real practical use - maybe if you have a machine that acts as a web server, mail server, game server etc etc its quick and easy to put it into the DMZ rather than setting up dozens of port forwards to it?

I'm ****** off cos the son's laptop works perfectly when I put it into the DMZ but it will not display web pages properly, download files (the connection with the server has been rest), or do windows updates if its not in the DMZ!!

      Its doing my head in.

Well, if I knew a bit more about this topic, then in would be happy to help you!

Thank you for your help regarding this though!...I have a network setup at home using the Netgear router Sky provided and I think it's a load of tripe!

Really bad router (or just b@st@rdized by Sky's own firmware!)

      Oh well...Thank you again!

      Gordon,

Have you done anything to the port forwarding rules or the website blocking etc? Also I know it may be frustrating but I do not think that swearing is the way to go or even substituting characters so it represents a word we would not normally use infront of our kids.

It does sound like a permissions issue of sorts...

      Re: Default DMZ Server

hehehehe - it could have been worse - it was your forum that inserted the ***** instead of what I actually typed.

Anyway, nope, the router has had one firewall rule added by me for incoming services and that is for utorrent.

I've added a new rule opening all ports to the laptop IP and it works so its definately a blocking issue which I simply cannot fathom...?
Clearly I need to sort something out for security purposes.

Maybe I will factory reset the router - I assume there is a button for that somewhere on it.
